  • Alaska trip

Planning on riding to Alaska next July. Has anyone made this trip before? Would anyone like to go along? Planning on leaving St. Louis, MO mid July and be gone about 6 weeks.

I’m in Washington and have been considering the trip myself. I also would definitely love to hear if anyone has made this trip.

Yes it is. I've wanted to do it for a while. Would have done it this year but the border was closed.

Roadie that makes sense to do it now with more time available. I think I'd enjoy something like that but taking that much time off work would be tough. But it sounds like you'll do it over a long enough span to really enjoy it. Keep us posted on your plans. If nothing else we can live vicariously through you.

I understand about the vacation time. That's why I've waited to to it when I don't have to rush back. I'll try to keep you updated on the trip.

Was planning to ride this year but the border was closed. Next year is a go if the borders are open which they should be.

A good friend of mine did the trip several years ago on a dual sport and it beat the hell out of the motorcycle. He rode from Montana. Lots of breakdowns along the way. He said the roads are in constant disrepair and construction so the abuse on the suspension is dramatic. I know I'd never attempted on my road star. Frost heave is the culprit and damages the roads. I think he even blew out his fork seals a time or two.

The condition of the roads being the main concern for certain. That along with gas stops.

You have to ride slow and not be in a hurry.

My friend Dave is not the type to be in a hurry or to abuse his motorcycle. He is a great rider and a great mechanic. He even stopped at my house in Washington on the way back because he was so beat up he had his wife drive with the truck to pick him up from Montana. He's incredibly physically fit and no wimp.

My friend Nick Galyon rode from Key West to the arctic ocean 3 years ago. He and a friend bought BMW dual purpose bikes and rode to the end of the road. Had a set of off road tires installed at Fairbanks. Made the trip up and then back to Anchorage and had the bikes shipped back to Fla. He said he would have like to ride them back but was short on time. They are both Captains for AA.. They both own and ride Harleys. But he laughed when I asked him if they were riding them up. He sent me e-mails and pics almost every day, and they made the trip without incident.or breakdowns.. He has also rode the Coast to coast, on a 1600 BMW K GT He only stopped once for a 4 hour sleep. Be nice to be able to buy what is needed for a particular ride. LOL

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the Harleys could have been ridden if they weren't going to the Arctic Ocean? I know the Dalton Hwy is mostly unpaved. We were thinking of renting a jeep for that portion if we go that for north.

I have rode from OK to Calgary across Banff Park down to Seattle and back to Black Hills and back, and basically all over the westerrn Us. and parts of Mexico and never had a Mechanical problem. Just one instance of bad fuel which plugged fuel filter and quit me in western New Mexico. I have always carried a spare fuel filter. only needed it but once. But I was riding a Goldwing.! My advice is get a touring bike to tour not a cruiser.
