  • Exhausting adventures of a Roadliner

I love messing with exhausts cause there's nothing that says you've arrived like the sound of your bike. The Liner is one bad mother, but the stock exhaust is more like "shut your mouth" then "Hey lookie here!". Besides the Liner makes it so easy to swap tail pipes it invites attention to modification. I'd already done a stage 3 on a previous Liner, so I wanted to try something a little different this time around. I started out by building a short 2" turnout, then a longer 2" turnout, then a longer slash cut 2" straight pipe ala V&H style. They were all fun to do, but man do they backfire unless you stuff something in there to give it a little back pressure. Eventually I built a 2.5", 3", 4" and then a 5" tail pipe in search of the right sound for that 1900 cc monster. What was pretty obvious from the get go was that each increase in diameter produced a better sounding pipe and by that I mean a lower frequency exhaust tone.

Now, it just so happens that the stock muffler is 5" in diameter, so it doesn't take a genius to see where I'm going with this. As I had been working my way up through these larger and larger pipe sizes, the thought occurred to me, why not just go 5" ? Amazon is only a click away and soon I had a chrome 5" turnout sitting on my kitchen table. I then set about to completely disassemble a spare stock muffler with the aid of a 4" grinder and some thin cut-off wheels. That stock muffler provides you with all the goodies you need to fabricate your own tail pipe, so it was well worth the money. As before I started out with a short pipe and kept making them longer and shorter as the mood struck me, mixing and matching the stock internals to fit the various lengths of pipe.

As I went through these different configurations I'd post pics on FB for feed back and boy did I get it! Tough crowd over there! By now I'd made a LOT of different pipes, so I thought before I spend the time and money on the next build, let's see what guys like before I commit to another project. So, with a little computer magic I whipped up four potential designs and asked every one to rate them in order of preference. The clear winner and maybe even my personal favorite was the simple slant cut pipe found in the lower left corner of the photo linked below.

So, with that in mind I built this.

Now, I'm not saying it's the last one I'll ever build, but it's so good that there's not a lot of incentive for me to craft up another version. It truly does rumble at idle and sounds authoritative as you're going through the gears. Somehow in all the screwing around I did, I managed to get the baffles in the right configuration and there's no backfiring on decel and plenty of low end grunt where you want it the most.

That's the one I made for myself and I thought it was awesome! Unfortunately, it seems no one else liked it but me and now you. If I had to guess I'd say that having that massive 5" hole staring you in the face put off most people. In a way I'm hoping this straight pipe grows on me, but I won't know that until I've had more than one or two short rides to decide. It looks like my riding season is gone for now.

I like the turn out look but it probably would drag a lot on right hand turns. the slash cut pipe makes more sense........

The way I had the 5" turnout mounted, you'd have to drag the frame before you scraped the chrome on that baby. Admittedly, it was a bit loud on a longer ride, so I'm hoping that running the exhaust straight out the back with help mitigate that a bit and give a passenger some relief as well.
