  • My first Cruiser!

    Hey everyone,
Just took the leap from sportbikes to something a bit more comfortable, a 2005 Yamaha Midnight Star 1700. Fully stock bike with 23k miles for $3500. So far I absolutely love riding this bike and have no regrets buying it.

I do have a couple questions though regarding these bikes.

    1) The engine almost sounds like it knocks. I've heard that it can be caused by the bike either running too lean or too rich and can be fixed by adjusting the carb. Is this taking me in the right direction or what might you suggest?

    2) Where is a good reliable site for buying aftermarket parts for the engine? I have no interest in changing the appearance of the bike, but I would like a little bit more power. At the moment I'm thinking cams, performance carb, performance intake, then a tune.

from Moncton NB Canada. Nice bike! Bang for your buck performance =
    1. cheap k&n filter with proper i.d. for carb.
    2. jet kit ( barons) with adjustable pilot mix screw and Yamaha pilot jet
    3. 2 in 1 exhaust has been proven (i can vouch for it too) to be the best h.p. gain.

Do these and you may be satisfied. Opens the bike up good and if you want more you will need to talk to Davej as he has been in his engine. Kaching, kaching!!! $$$$

The sound you’re hearing is most likely normal.

Talk to Davej about performance. He did the big bore with performance cams and all that. Makes a big difference but it’s big $$$.

Im assuming from your name that you’ve had some sport bikes. The Roadstar will never have that kind of power as I’m sure you know. If you have the time and money for real performance upgrades then do it but I went the route of a different bike because I just couldn’t stand the lack of power available. Among other things (out of a touring bike setup. Still have an around town Roadstar that’s pretty cool).

      Basic modifications are as follows:

Aftermarket exhaust that flows better. 2-1 setups provide the best overall power gain. Also, Roadstar sounds awesome with aftermarket pipes.

Higher flowing air filter setup (few different ways to accomplish this)

Ported intake manifold that is properly sealed up and not leaking at all.

Properly tuned carburetor for the above setup. This includes the right main jet, pilot jet, and needle.

Here's another thread that talked about engine noises. Mine too makes that knock you describe. But mine is fuel injected so it's not a lean/rich condition like you might encounter on a carb'd bike.

Awesome, thank you all for the quick responses. Ill track down this DaveJ guy and find out what he recommends in addition to what you all suggested. As far as trying to get the same power out of this bike as my R1 has, thats not the goal. For the time being I plan on keeping the R1 for those days I feel like hitting triple digits. However a bit more power than stock is what I have in mind.

from California. I too came from the sport bike world and have never looked back. With some simple mods the Roadstar [R*] can be a competent canyon carver. Replacing the rear shock is a *must*. A member here [Smokescreens] makes an inexpensive shock replacement called the Roadwing, it literally transforms the bike. I'll never own another R* without one. There are a couple good options for improving the forks too. As far as the knocking, some is normal, but some isn't; check the site or search YouTube for a video on "normal R* sounds". A couple things not covered in the video: If you lug the bike, it can knock, and that's normal, but if you have lifter tick at start up, or knocking under heavy load, that's not. There are fixes for both if you're not afraid to get your hands dirty. As for engine mods, as it's been said, take care of breathing and blowing first, get the carb properly jetted and you may be surprised. If you're still not satisfied, then you can talk to Davej about cams and HC pistons, etc. As far as aftermarket parts sources, it really depends on what part you're looking for, there are many options; ask as you go. Just hang on to your wallet, I've never spent as much money modifying a bike as i have my R*, but I don't regret any of it.

Good plan. Every man needs 2-4 bikes to satisfy any possible craving that comes along, ha ha.

You ever get that R1 on the track to see what it’s really capable of? Where are you located?

Also, want more info on the R1. Year, pics, etc. There are a few of us sport bike guys around here that can relate...

2003, only mod is a powercommander III and two brother exhaust with a proper tune. Rips hard. Unfortunately my fairings are old and starting to fall apart so for the time being its garaged until further notice. I'm up in the PNW in Everett, Wa.

Don’t worry about engine noise. They’re ticky. It’s a Yamaha thing. Don’t worry about. They run for ever and then some more

Representing Scorpion Gulch, Arizona. One of the most endearing features of the Roadstar is it's dependability. When you make performance upgrades like cams and pistons you take away from that. If you limit your upgrades to pipes, air breather, even a bigger carb (Mikuni HSR 42 is the common upgrade), then reliability won't suffer as much. Don't waste your money on a Power Commander, as most people on here will testify that they don't help and may make the bike run worse. J&P Cycle and SS Cycle are good places online to shop for goodies, also check Ebay and our own RSC Classified section. Good luck and good hunting.

You can get a 31t front pulley that will give it some more zip, you will gain rpms on the highway.

these air cooled twins are pretty noisy motors. Many people think they have a knock in the motor until they realize that it is just the way they sound. There are a couple videos on youtube explaining the different sounds that they make. I found this one, but couldn't find the other one that I was looking for.
Pipes, air cleaner, port intake, tune carb, are usually the first upgrades power wise... I think the biggest bang for the buck is putting a Barron's 31Tooth front sprocket on. (don't use a cheap aluminum one) It's like added performance cams for about $100 and is easy to do. It will increase your Rpm's by about 200 but you don't realize it much.
An "ED seat is by for the favorite upgrade for comfort.

owning a motorcycle is not a matter of life or death, it is much more important than that

from Richardson, Tx. I swore up and down that I would never get a cruiser, because of all the chrome I would have to polish. I had had enough of polishing metal while in the Navy (although , in the submarine service, there wasn't NEARLY as much polishing as the surface and shore-bound Navy...polishes are atmosphere contaminanates). Flash forward several years to 2004, when I got my first cruiser...a Yamaha 650 Classic. That was soon followed by a '09 950T, and my first '07 RoadStar (which I wrecked after only owning it 48 days!... two weeks after the insurance company wrote it off, I had its near twin in my driveway). I've taken several long solo trips on my current R*, but @ Thanksgiving of last year, I also bought a '15 1300 tourer. It's a bit nimbler than the R* around town, and quicker, due to the different engine and fuel management. Like the man said..." who says you can only have ONE motorcycle?"
