  • Carburetor leaks oil

    I have oil leaking from under my 2000 road star carburetor.
    Does anybody have an idea of why this is happening?

    If you still have your crank vent going to the back of your air filter box that's probably where it's coming from?

      Exactly as NCB stated. Additionally, over filling the oil, and/or sustained wide open throttle operation makes the oil issue worse.


      Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

        Thank you. I'll be checking the level more closely and cleaning that carb when i replace the manifold this weekend.

          This is the best way to check the oil on a Road Star (Same as a Wild Star) Most of us if it does not have a oil leak or is not burning oil, just change it, put in ONLY 4 qts and never check it. Just change it every 3-4k

            Four quarts in, four quarts out. Never check the oil and never add any more. If your not leaking or burning the oil, then the four quarts are still in there.

              First of all, . Second, be sure to read the info here regarding checking the oil. There's a specific procedure, and, even if you follow it precisely you might get 5 different reading if you check it 5 times. If the bike is new to you it's best to just do an oil and filter change with 4 quarts of quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1 V-twin and a good filter like a Napa Gold or Wix, anything but a Fram. You may have to replace the air filter as well if oil is dripping from the airbox.

                I'm going to notify everyone as soon as one of my 5 machines with Fram filters in them shits the bed. Internet legend. NEVER seen any filter but a Champion on a IO-360 even be suspect in a lubrication problem, but I don't think it was even a "cause" in that case.

              yes, ive overfilled before while doing an oilchange be careful. 3 bikes, also, , and i have a KN universal air filters that i hooked up the PCV tube from top of rear head . the OEM airbox puts that in the bottom part of airbox so it gets sucked in gradually. with the KN's it messes up carbs with oil. i just got those Up123 filtersand im gonna put them on this week, on the end of that PCV tubing, and plug up air filter. these are washable and reusable. little filters a liitle bigger than a keurig coffee k cup.
