  • Last years trip into the Northern Territory (Australia)

My annual leave was building up so I decided to take some time off work. What to do with my time off?. I had only bought my roadie recently and so far hadn't taken it further then 100km away from home - infact I'd never ridding a motorbike more than 100km period - my last bike (a 250cc hyosung) I rode about 500km in about 5 years... Why not a challenge. Well I decided to go for a ride up to the Northern Territory from Adelaide. I had a couple of weeks to spare. I'd end up riding for 5 hours plus on some days. Averaging around 500km per day. All up I did just under 4500KM over the following days. I started from Salisbury (20km north of Adelaide) and headed up past Port Augusta along the Stuart Highway. The first few days were a real steep learning curve. My legs were sore from gripping the tank - I was scared that my feet would come of the floor boards. Anyhow travelling for hours on end I slowly began to relax. I'd overtake many cars towing campervans - after doing a few 'road trains' the campervans were a piece of piss. Some of these road trains had three trailers behind them and at 110km per hour on a skinny road I was really seeing my life flash before my eyes..Other hazards included emus, kangaroos, cattle and birds. I came across a lot of roadkill as well as many written off cars by the side of the road. I only rode at night once and it nearly ended badly. I was racing to get to a little town to set up camp before it got dark. Probably doing around 140km p/h and in front of me jumped out a rabbit - it literally just missed my front wheel. I also found in the early mornings flocks of birds would take off from the sides of the road - not a pretty sight when you yourself are 'flying' along. The Stuart Highway is pretty much a straight road - You'll ride for hours with little change in scenery. Not till you get to NT that you start to see some features. I stopped along the way in every town I'd come across - some being 200km apart. Woomera, Cooberpedy and so on. Finally I crossed over into the Northern Territory. Here the speed limit is 130km/h and the first section after the border was unlimited, if I recall correctly. Well I managed to get the roadie up to 160KM/h ie 100Miles/h. After hours of riding, 100km/h felt like I was standing still lol. Ok so the bike ran quite well besides one major issue - I was leaking a heap of fuel - it was streaming out and my leg was getting wet. Upon further investigation it was two things. One was the seal of the petcock to the tank - I tightened it up as much as I could but it still dripped. The other was the pump itself - it was gushing fuel around it's mid section. That night I decided to remove the pump and reroute the existing fuel line directly into the carb. It worked fine and was a great relief as I was some 2000Km away from home at the time. A quick stop in Alice Springs and I headed towards the West MacDonnell Ranges - An amazing part of Australia. Comming back I did Ayers rock and the Olgas. So yeah that was my trip. I really feel like I've done something special and I feel like I've understood Australia a little more. A few tips - don't go alone if you don't have to - I had my dad drive up behind me in his station wagon. Wear some good protective clothes, wear ear plugs, have a windsheild, take rest breaks every couple of hours and importantly don't ride at dusk or dawn.

Congrats. that's sounds like quite an achievement given all the circumstances. I'm sure it feels good do have done it. And you're absolutely right about avoiding dusk and dawn in the rural areas if possible. That's when all the critters like to run across the road. Little tip a friend once told me, if it fits on a dinner plate, gas it!

        Ride safe!

real nice...hell david attenbourough hasn't been up there that i know of...glad someone is out there...from what i've gleaned from the nature shows the northwest of australia has the largest salt water crocks on the planet...i'd be buying my drinking water at the gas stations, swimming in the pool and washing in the motel's shower...you'd just be a welcome snack for one of those critters...when i travel out west i'm at the great lakes, not much of and adventure unless you're into large women stuffed into bathing suits or sweat pants...

Nice looking bike. That's a really cool trip you have taken. Glad you have done it with minimal problems. I Like to here the stories about those rides.
I have had that trip on my small dream bucket list for over 20 years, but know it's not going to happen with my funds.

That's something I would have had liked to have done.
Those little trips sometimes just don't get you in tune with your bike and as such you need to do a few days in the saddle. I did mine from Brisbane to Canberra.
Some great photos and at a rough guess the 1st one was taken at Snowtown.
Did you have any problems not running the pump . Anything like it starving for fuel when getting up to speed or overtaking? .

My post was a joke and I wasn't looking for a reply, but as roadiemort points out, petepumpkin hasn't had activity since '19 so you may not get a reply.
