  • This is my 2003 build

I am trying to do this from my phone. I hope it works. Hahaha
Please let me know what you think and remember that it is not finished yet.
    This is where I started.

This was my basic upgrades. Seat, lights and a custom built plate holder.

I started doing some paint, but have more to do still.
I am going with gunmetal grey.
This is rattle can and it is base/clear coat.

I cut the fenders, but I have some adjustments and trimming still left to do.

The fenders looked funny with the spacing in the rear, so I decided to adjust it with a lower kit.
I did adjustable rear links and installed a GoldWing rear strut with the manual RAP system.
The GoldWing strut was very well built, looked great, and performs great.
I got it from from this site.
I also installed a Baron lowering kit for the front, but I will replace that with some progressive springs soon.

If you look, you will notice that I pulled a lot of the chrome parts off also.

This is a very quick showing of all the work.
Anyone that has done a build will know that.

My next plans are going to be…
Handlebars (drag bars) with end cap mirrors.
I will do forward foot controls. I am looking at some HD controls that I will adapt to make work. I think it will go well.
Convert some V-Star wheels so I can get a larger rear tire and alloy wheels.
I will also do some custom wiring for the current lights and maybe some lights under the bike.
I ride a lot in the dark. I leave my house at 4:00am every day and I always ride.

This is how it looks today.
I think I am happy, but I know there is much more planned for the future.

Last thing. I didn’t post this in the classifieds yet, but all parts that were removed are for sale.
                hahaha

A great way to improve how rattle can paint goes on is to put the can in some hot hot tap water for about 10 minutes first to thin things out. It will flow better.

That's an interesting tip. I'll have to try that.

I didn’t want to do that because I wanted the pain and the part to be the same temperature. I didn’t want to take a chance of any adhesion problems.
But I did place al the parts outside in the shade for a few hours first to ensure temp.

I've seen some great results with "rattle can". One of the best was the Eastwood brand but that stuff is almost $30 a can. I guess if you compare that to buying all the equipment you would need to use a spray gun (if you didn't already have it), it's not horrible. Bikes don't have that much area to paint compared to a car.

That's a beautiful transformation. I have always loved this brand for Yamaha's slogan - We build it. You make it your own.

Definitely a unique look. I'm sure a lot of onlookers would mistake that for a Harley.

Thanks for the kind words. I am only going to a resto-mod type look, but most people think that everything is a Harley. Hahaha

I will send some pictures of the brands, but the base is from Walmart and the clear is from Autozone.

I would like to add the most important part. There was a lot of wet sanding and buffing after.
When I paint the fenders soon, I will try to record my process and post it to my Instagram so you can see the video.

Should be within the next few days.

I've got a tank I'm fixing and will need to paint (will eventually get some hand painted custom work). I'd enjoy seeing the process you use.
