Back in the ‘50’s I remember my dad handing me a bag of old vacuum tubes and heading off to the 7/11 on my bicycle to test them on that tube tester contraption. Isolate the culprit and purchase a new one to get the boob tube up, and running in time for whatever popular show was coming on.

The 50's was a bit before me, but I DO understand what you're referring to -
I remember doing the same thing but in the late 1960's early 70's. Hell we didn't have a color TV until 1973. -
Lol, we never had a TV black or color, the old man never allowed one in the house, God told him the devil was inside, I used to hang around the local TV shop to watch Batman. I didn't know at the time my Dad was a visionary, not just an asshole.
