Used to run bootleg 10 meter radios in my big truck for shooting skip. Got a closet full of them. Now, just 11 meter.

The band is pretty dead there, as well.

Do it. There are some single or dual band units that would probably suit your ideas. I use a 2 meter mobile but think I need a 2 meter 70cm. Or just go whole hog and go FT-891 or FT-857D. Licensing required for band use tho. There are plent of HT (hand Held) units that work like never before too.

Dig 'em up. 10 meter is low due to the 11 year solar cycle, we've had 2 years of a spotless sun. Propagation on some bands is difficult without solar activity.

Those 10 meter 11 meter import rigs are pretty cool actually. I happened across a Galaxy DX99V and after figuring out it wasn't just a CB (or legal for 11 meter use) got licensed, right on up to Extra Class. There is actually a lot of activity depending on where you are, time and band. 70cm and 2 meter is everywhere. I recently rolled from MI to FL via pickup and programmed all of the repeaters along my route. Made lots of contacts. No riff-raff on amateur radio like 11 meter, sure you know what I mean.

It's funny you brought this subject up, i was just looking into what it takes to get a license the other day. It seems you can get a decent HH radio for about $100 and Morse code isn't required anymore (i'd always heard that was the hang up for many).
