  • Had leg surgery today!

Summer of 2014 I totaled a rental BMW 650GS that had absolutely no counter steering geometry in north central Oregon. Totally my fault hitting the end of a guard rail and a clean complete break of my right tibia and fibula. The surgeon used the current technology to install a 13” long rod (called a nail) down through the middle of the tibia where the bone marrow is. They are typically not removed and don’t give any problems. I had no problem with the leg until last Christmas, when my leg started hurting non stop. All tests, blood work, ultra scans revealed nothing wrong. My last X-ray revealed increased bone growth below the break which indicated that something was stressing the bone. So with consultation with the surgeon, my PT friends and colleagues, I decided to have the rod removed. Had the surgery today at sunrise. The video is not of me, but of how the procedure is done. An extension is threaded into the end of the rod and it is hammered out. No blood, but don’t watch this if you are queezy!

Just like taking out the AIS fittings on a 1600. They needed to apply a little heat and that would have come right out. They used a little too much Loctite when they installed it.

Hope your recovery is quick !!!

Yeah I'm not going to watch that either. The description is enough for me.

Here's to hoping the healing goes quickly and smoothly for you.

Steve, great video! you would think they would use some kind of powered vibrating or impact tool though.

I found the specific brand of my rod and their extraction tool is more of a controlled slide hammer than that horrible one in the video. Either way, the same amount of force is needed to drive it out. My surgeon said a lot of fibrous bone had grown into the vacant screw holes so it took him about 15 minutes with the hammer. Glad I was out cold!

I've observed several orthopedic surgeries and it is always amazing how vigorous surgeons are with the bones. Scary strong but incredibly fragile at the same time.
                                    Go ahead, I dare ya.
