looking to try my hand in casting my own bullets to go along with reloading my ammo. i know we are a diverse group here so if you guys have some laying around or know where some is for dirt cheap i would greatly appreciate it. scrap yards wont sell the stuff to me and im sure i can do better than close to $2 a pound on ebay or way more from lead alloy suppliers

I'll show my ignorance when it comes to reloading.

What type of lead? I used to scavenge old wheel weights and melt them down for sinkers for fishing. Will that type work or is there something else?

wheel weights can be lead, lead/tin mix or just zinc. if they are lead/tin or pure lead weights im interested.

zinc ones "should" have a ZN stamped in them. and they wont bend or dent easy.

Start collecting dead car batteries for their lead. You can also buy 80lb ingots.http://www.leadforlead.com/lead-ingots/lead-ingots.html

I don't think you would want pure lead, antimony or tin lead alloy would be better wouldn't it. Pure lead will not take the pressure or heat and I don't think would make good bullets for anything high power. I used to drive truck for a lead company in my 20's. I just remembered I used to deliver to Crossman Arms and pellet lead I think is 6%antimony.

pistol ammo is not what i would be casting for. i have a 300 blackout that i want subsonic rounds to be its food. at near $1 a round for factory and $0.25 a commercial projectile for reloading i can cast that bullet for about $0.07 a projectile. casting is not allways about cheaper however. like in your case your waiting for ammo to be in stock. i can load ammo as long as i have raw materials on hand and i like to have a good supply of raw goods to work with. one more way i can be more self reliant and stretch a dollar doing so. i go through 1,000 rounds or so on a given trip to the range. given i have 4 shooters so thats 250 rounds each through a few different guns a trip.

I used to go to my local tire store and they would save wheel weights for me when I made my own sinkers.

Some Ammo is still pretty expensive. Good hunting rounds for my .500 S&W are $3 a round. I can reload them for 1/3 that.

I haven't reloaded lead in awhile but used to get lead bullets pretty cheap...I think I still have a box I'll check when I get home to see where i got them might help you out.....i remember melting lead down with my dad and making bullets when i was like 6 years old....i remember that they looked like little gold bars....we would in the garage casting bullets one night and loading them the next. It was always cool to be doing that with him....Awe memories

Need to talk to a remodeling company that does bathrooms (older homes) I am one and usually get one lead lined shower pan removal per year. That's about 400-500 .50 cal balls we make depending on the size of the lead pan. A lot of company's hire Nitwits that do the demo and they chuck everything in the dumpster not knowing what good lead is, but if we are working near a dumpster we look in it for that shit. My buddy goes to a lot of Farmers auctions and says you can find all kinds of shit in old boxes and crates that sell cheap. I have also traded my spent brass for lead too. Good Luck

I’m looking as well. I need 57 lbs and I’m up to 21 so far. I found a good deal at a fishing store that was closing. I got all they had. Batteries have very little lead anymore and not worth the hassle. Tiffing contractors come up with some on tear offs. The scrap dealers used to sell it. I bought a lot for weight for my race cars. Ask now days and they think your crazy.
