Superior Court Judge Anita Farris struck down Seattle's gun storage ordinance, ruling it violates the state's preemption law.

whats to shoot down, looks like it passed allready..... that is a rediculous tax. why is it illegal for stores to price gouge but its just fine if our government does it?

        @Smokescreens

The state uses taxes (and subsidies) to shape the behavior of the population. Think cigarette taxes. A pack today costs north of 10 dollars in some locations. The percentage of people who smoke ciggies under the age of 30 is now less than 15%. Some of that is surely because people are aware of the negative health consequences of smoking, but some of that is also a product of the artificially high prices of cigarettes (taxes).

On the other hand, stores "gouge" for profit. The state (in this case) isn't raising taxes for profit, it's raising taxes to discourage a behavior.

J89k $10 for a pack of smokes is also a rediculous tax. young kids are not smoking ciggarettes as much anymore because its not the "cool" thing to smoke anymore. i see way more kids vaping then i ever seen smoking. and people who use to smoke are switching to vaping to get away from the taxes and costs all while we dont even know if vaping is better or worse for you.

discrimination is wrong and as such a discriminating tax is equally unjust. its just a excuse to raise taxes and steal more money from us that we see no benifits from.
if the government honestly wanted us to be healthier they would just ban smoking out right. a tax hikes is just a money grab.

J89k - Who has the right to decide that my right to defend my self is bad for my health and that my defensive behavior should be changed? Bullshit! Behavior kills people, not weapons. I'll just buy my ammo next door or use a baseball bat. Nothing but virtue signaling by politicians who are running the Pacific Northwest into the ground.

Smokescreens asked why the state is allowed to do something that stores are not. I wasnt moralizing, simply stating the logic of those types of taxes. They stand in contrast to taxes such as the gasoline tax. The state certainly isnt discouraging the use of gasoline - they are looking to benefit financially from its use.

The opposite of taxation would be a subsidy. This is also meant to direct human behavior. States haven't been increasing gasoline taxes to encourage the shift to alternative energy sources, instead they provide subsidies to those who do. Think subsidies for solar panels or use of HOV lanes for those with electric cars.

States have long used taxes and subsidies to shape the behavior of their populations. The alternative is physical force.

You won't see an ammo tax in Texas... I promise... my guess would be that most voters in Tacoma support such a tax, otherwise supporting the policy wouldn't be politically viable. This is how democracy works.

As to your question about who has the right to impose taxes to alter your behavior? The answer would be the state. Unless, I suppose, you are a proponent of anarchy.

Breitbart is a too radical for my tastes. The entire tone of the article is a bit too divisive for me. I don't think the solution to America's ills is to push further to the right and left... I think it's to find some space in the middle on things we agree on.

When Trump characterized covid as the "Chinese flu" I absolutely see it as pandering to the base and racist elements of the Republican party. That's not to say I don't think we need change in our policy towards China. Hell yeah I think we should bring production back to the United States, but not because I hate the Chinese or think they are evil. It's because I'd rather have my money go to an American family in Michigan than supporting a sweat shop in China. It also makes sense from a national security perspective with things like PPE and technology. We shouldn't be reliant on foreign powers for essential products, without which we would suffer tremendously. We also need to safeguard trade secrets if we expect American businesses to compete in a globalized economy. I'm happy to spend more on American made goods to do so. I just bought myself a nice pair of Klein needle nose pliers. Normally $36. Open box deal for $21. A splurge for sure (especially at full price), but something I'm willing to do in order to buy quality American produced products.

The elites in our society want us to focus on the divide between right in left. They're laughing all the way to the bank while we fight each other for the scraps and disproportionately suffer the consequences (health, environmental, economic) of a system that has created more inequality than any system in the history of mankind.

Nearly every member of congress is a millionaire. Do you think their interests are more likely to align with each other or with the average middle class family?

Gay Marriage, Abortion, Gun Control, Religious freedom - these cultural issues are designed to distract and divide average Americans while the Robber Barons Fleece the country.

Speaking to the current situation with the riots. People don't protest, riot, and loot because they are happy and comfortable. These are acts of desperation. I have little doubt that to be Black in America is very different (and often worse) than to be White in America. There are systematic elements of American society that create very real (and figurative) walls between White America and Black America. In particular, I'm thinking about the the criminal justice system, the educational system (and it's funding by local property taxes), and the labor market.

Devah Pager, a British sociologist trained at the UW Madison, did a study comparing White and Black men in the labor market in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Her study was on point enough to get her a job Harvard (if you are interested in methodological details of how the study was conducted I'm happy to discuss). She found that White men with a felony cocaine conviction were about 50% more likely to get called back for an interview than Black men with a college degree and no criminal record. Think about that for a second. That's huge.

Before she conducted her research she did a phone survey of employers in Milwaukee. 95% of employers (the same ones she sent folks to for her research) said they would hire black folks. After conducting the research only 12% were even willing to interview them...

She recreated this finding in NY, LA, and Chicago.

I imagine ameliorating some of these inequalities would go a long way in reducing social discontent.

While it's clear we very likely disagree politically (on this issue at least), I don't think you are my enemy. I don't take joy when bad things happen to you, your neighborhood, or city. I'm cheering for ya and I know there are common interest that can bridge us... LIKE MOTORCYCLES!

This isn't the vibe I get from breitbart. They very much seem to want to amplify national disunity. They also seem to embrace tribalism over fact based conversations.

Forgive my long windedness. Just graduated (2 weeks ago) with my phd in Sociology, these are things I study and taught about. My own research focuses on local elections.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand the definition of 'owned' being used in this article. That, and some of the terms he uses for those he is supposedly supporting. Before you go off on me, I am a gun-owning, Patron-level member of the NRA, living in the liberal-controlled Dallas/FT Worth area. Protestors, I can understand, and somewhat sympathize with-looters? I agree with President Trump...."when the looting starts, the shooting starts" (but then, most of the shooting crimes in the area lately has occurred in the predominately 'minority areas'.) Also, during the recent rioting, a local shooting range was burglarized, and I'll give you two guesses as to the ethnicity of the videoed perps! The video taken in VanNess, CA. definitely shows the bias of SOME LEOS. I'm glad the reporter finally got the police to listen to her!

To own someone is to make them look like an idiot, be clever, show them what's what.

It is often used in the video game world. Think first person shooter. You shoot someone, you've just owned (or embarassed) them.

I went in to look for a Springfield Hellcat at a local sportsman warehouse on Sunday. Hadn’t been in there since maybe March. They hardly had anything in the way of ammo and handguns. Normally they have approximately 8-12 feet of nothing but handguns on the wall packed full. Not even a 4 ft section worth this time. Ammo was about the same luckily I load my own also and have plenty of supplies at the moment

                          Hunting on the increase.

The run on guns and ammo in the U.S. during 2020 is compounded by the fact that it is hunting season and interest in hunting has increased.

Yep- Walmart is leftist. When there were protests in the DFW area about the George Floyd death (in a completely state!), local Walmarts, including the grocery stores, closed at 4:30, the time when those that were working away from home were headed home, with absolutely no notice, no signs at the doors( you'd walk up to the entrance and THEN an employee would tell you that the store was closed! Plus, as the article stated, they called on Congress and the governmentto pass even more gun control laws, when the ones already on the books are not being enforce, criminals are shooting even more people, and Democrat candidates are calling to release even more felons into the populace. I am so sick of hearing nothing but attack ads on the television, a lot against candidates in areas far removed from my local races, and nothing but Socialistic promises from Democrat (they are NOT democratIC!) candidates for federal offices!
Besides, have you ever noticed how much of the merchandise in Walmart is made elsewhere than the USA?
