Merry Christmas Everyone! Do something OUTRAGEOUS for cheers and celebration.

Anne got stuck in airports, had to turn around and fly back to her family in SoCal after 36 hours of tag in various airports (Santa Ana, Las Vegas, San Jose, Santa Ana) trying to get to Spokane, so I'll be watching TV... Spokane airport shut down due to freezing rain coating the runways with ice.

That's outrageous, right?

Crazy winter so far, -12* Thursday morning. A deer literally froze to death while seeking shelter outside the rear door of my warehouse, curled up against my door. Really sad. Lots of snow on the ground, tough to find food for the local deer. Nature can be really cruel.

We've had several feet of snow so far this year. I've shoveled more snow than in any other time in my life. My daily workout...

Spending Christmas in Phoenix is great. I just wished that I brought my bike though, as it is 72 degrees here. Perfect riding weather. I’m getting the itch!!!!

Anne and her beloved Southwest Airlines...

She was supposed to return home last Friday, the 23rd, after a 5-day work assignment in several California cities. Got half way home and then SW canceled, from SoCal to Spokane. Tried workarounds, then returned to SoCal to spend Christmas with family. She was VERY lucky to hop that flight via waiting standby.

The soonest they could get her home was sometime this week. So they booked her for Wednesday, the 28th.

All the while I was scheduling my plans for picking her up at the airport, a 70 minute trip each way (all highway).

On Monday, the 26th, the day after Christmas, Southwest informs her that her Wednesday flight has been canceled. She's an A-list flyer with them, tons of miles. The soonest they can book her again is for next week (next year). She checked every other airline, and so did I, and the soonest we can find a flight is for the 3rd next week. That includes searching several other airports on each end of the flight, with me driving for hours just to pick her up.

Nothing. And as it turns out, she is scheduled to work in California again next week, so she's opted to just stay until that assignment is finished later in the week. Probably didn't change anything anyway. She left home a week ago Monday, on the 19th. A five day assignment is turning into 17+ days!

Thus far, no one has offered to pay for food or lodging; neither the airline nor her company. Her company has workers stranded all over the USA. She's been staying at her brother's house in SoCal. Very lucky she has that. She spent one night in the airport after the first delay, stuck in San Jose. If she'd gotten stuck there, I'd have driven down to pick her up.

Anyone else?

I was going to switch Christmas plans to visit my family in Western Washington, above Seattle near Everett, but the mountain passes were closed for days in a row. The one I use, over Stevens Pass, just opened last night, after being closed since last Wednesday. Heavy ice on the roadway.

To add to that, on returning home from my last run up to our cabin to plow our driveways and repair a frozen pipe, my AWD SUV lost reverse gearing. Didn't realize it until I'd tried to park after I got home. That's my go-to adverse weather vehicle.

No plans to go anywhere anytime soon...

The only travel delays that I have suffered was when I worked in Iraq, The base I was assigned to was small and the end of the line. You had to either convoy out when the trucks would run or catch a chopper which didn't always fly because of the weather. You would plan on a 2 week R&R but could be out for a month because of the delays each direction. Not a big deal coming back into country but a real hassle to make reservations and meet family pn the way out.

Now that Christmas has passed, here's a pic of the deer that froze to death at the backdoor of my warehouse. It had huddled in there out of the wind, likely picking up some slight heat from under the door. Likely starving and couldn't generate enough heat to make it through the -12* temps overnight.

This one hit me deep. Very difficult to process the agony that it must have experienced through the night. If only I'd known it was back there.

No, I just wasn't in the mood. Asked around town and no one else seemed interested either. The Town crew came by and picked it up the next day. Maybe one of them knew someone who could use the meat. It was already frozen stiff.
