Oil coming out on top of transmission

  • Oil coming out on top of transmission

    Hello, I have a 2002 Yamaha Road Star Midnight with 33000 miles that I just bought. After riding it, I notice oil setting in the Allen bolt on top of the transmissoion. Do these have a vent. I have attached a picture with an arrow of the bolt. Nothing seams to be leaking above. Not sure what this is for since the gear oil is put in on the side. Thanks in advance.

    Try tightening that plug?

    It’s mainly there for initially filling the engine after a build.

      I tightened it but didn’t have anything to wipe the oil out when I initially seen it. I’m going to ride it a bit tomorrow and see if it seeps anymore now that I wiped the oil off. Thanks for the quick response.

        Too much oil when changed last? Takes 4 quarts exactly with new filter....some shops will try to do 5, 5.3 etc....overfilled means it's coming out somewhere !

        If that plug was tight, then it's possible that it's cracked.
        They crack easily at the thread end and they don't need to be tight, just firm is all it needs.
        I know, because I've cracked one, and the crack is hard to see.

          I rode it today and seen more oil. Do you know where I can get one if it is cracked.

          You might try eBay, but I doubt your you'll find one there. The Yamaha dealer might be your only choice?
          Part # 4H7-15189-00-00 plug around $10.00.

          I say it’s leaking from above at the rear valve cover vent tube.

            I looked over the valve cover and head and it’s completely dry

          That is not a transmission.
          It is just the oil tank with transfer shaft going through it .
          It is just to slow the output shaft down a little and make the drive belt last longer.
          If oil is coming out of it you may have overfilled the oil.

            I believe the plug he has the arrow pointing to is where engine oil is initially put when the engine is newly assembled or the cases are split during a rebuild. It is not the transfer case which is to the immediate right but holds a small volume.

              Lucky, here’s the plug in question.

              It wouldn’t be that hard to remove, clean and inspect the plug and o ring for defects.
