Here is a good read for you guys to better understand what a bypass valve in an oil filter is for. It don't work the way that has been said above. It opens when oil is cold and thick to prevent a lack of oil supply and opens if the filter becomes plugged. Other than that your oil all gets filtered when the bike is running.

Our bikes don't have a deep sump or High pressure/high volume oil pump like what you would find on a race car. It is not at all like a system in a race car. in fact if you have a race engine that is bypassing dirty oil into the engine you need to modify your filtration system with a return oil filter like this.

Ah, cool... I was mistaken then. I had read that the small cans would pass 8 to 10 gals a minute, while the larger cans would pass 9 to 11 gals per minute. From that I surmised, wrongly, that more than 8 to 11 gals was being pumped, and the rest must be bypassing. I'm actually pleased to learn that other than when cold and thick, or clogged, it's all going through the filter medium.

Now, I think it worth adding... we that use a synthetic probably know that it flows much easier than dino, even when cold. One of the principal benefits of synthetic is its ability to flow and lubricate better during cold starts, and especially cold winter starts. Now, we can probably add the benefit that likely most, if not all, also goes through the filter element even upon a cold start up, too, since it's not typically near as thick as cold dino.

On top of that, if it's almost all always going through the filter medium, I would think it most unusual that hardly any steel residue could accumulate on a drain plug magnet... and, so I'd be even more interested in what guys using magnetic drain plugs have ever been finding on their plugs when they pull them for an oil change. Seems there should normally be just about 0 on them. Thanks for the correction, Dave.
