  • Clutch recall

I have a 2005 Yamaha Road Star. Ive been told that there was a recall on the clutch but have been unable to verify if this is the case. Anyone have any info on this. Thanks

Not that I have ever heard of. There was a Trans recall on the 99-2003 1600's. I think you are getting bad info from someone that is confusing the 1600 trans recall with a clutch. If there was a recall just about all of us (members with 1700's) would have received a recall notice and none of us have.

No clutch recall. Clutches are a wear item, and they could go bad by the operators abuse.

The 2005 through 2007 carbonated road Stars are considered the best models because they have the upgraded oil pump gear and electronic charging system. However, I believe the 2005 is the year that is most susceptible to sticky valve syndrome due to tight clearances between the valve stems and the valve guides. Just make sure you don't run the carb rich to prevent carbon buildup on the guides and stems.

I wish it was a recall item. I just passed 13k and I'm not feeling the pull through 3rd 4th and 5th that I did last year. Seems early, but maybe I need to do the spring conversion already?

all I did was the big air and open the exhaust up. I'd call my riding style "spirited" but I know how to use a clutch and it's not slipping from a stop at all. Does adding a couple ponies affect the stock diaphragm that I should go forth with the conversion? I don't like that I'm hearing there's a definite "yes you have clutch, no you don't have clutch" rather than the slip zone with the stock.

Mine slipped for the first time under 10K miles. It didn't slip all the time but it slipped enough that it startled me that first time. The OEM clutch spring is generally junk. Some last for miles and some don't last long at all.

When a clutch starts slipping, it will do so first in 5th gear, not in 1st gear. 1st gear is easier on the engine to move the bike and 5th is harder on the engine.

I always adjusted mine during a ride after the bike got hot, seemed to help.

                      Next on my list.

My go to adjustment is a nickel's worth of free play at the lever. Anyone have the correct spec off the top of their head?

The only recall there is was for the transmission on the earlier bikes. Google Yamaha Road Star Recall and look for a site where you plug in your VIN and it will tell you if the recall was performed. You can also call the dealer and ask. Give them your VIN and they can look it up. There's also supposed to be an asterisk stamped in the frame, just above the VIN, if the recall was performed, but not all dealers did that. If you've got an asterisk you know the transmission recall has been performed. If it hasn't been done, and your bike is one of the years effected, you should still be entitled to the recall service. Get it done and have them upgrade the oil pump gear while their at it, if you're bike doesn't already have the later pump gear. The recall is practically a rebuild, so it's also a good time to replace any other parts while your at it, free of labor.

That said, these bikes are known for having weak clutch springs and the clutch can start slipping in 5th gear on the freeway. When you roll on the gas, you can hear the RPMs climb but the bike doesn't go any faster, then the clutch starts to catch and the RPMs drop back down and you accelerate. That's been known to happen as early as 15k miles. Fortunately is a simple fix; just replace the stock clutch spring with an upgraded spring like the Barnett or EBC clutch spring.

                    Best of luck.

                      I didn’t have a nickel so I used 5 pennies!
