i recent bought a 2008 yamaha roadstar, after market pipes, cant find name of them online or on the bike anywhere. i believe it is a 1700 cc. i upgraded from a 98 shadow aero 1100cc. anyway few weeks ago guy i bought it from sent me a video of it running and sounded awesome. when i got it back to my house it was popping and spitting fire out the pipes. so i assumed dirty air filter. took it off and let it run without air filter and dam near burnt my leg with the fire coming out of the hose where the air filter usually is. guy said its def not a carburetor problem but everywhere i look online say that thats the issue. idk. what do yall think?

How old is the fuel, I'd make sure there's fresh fuel before trying any adjustments.

brand new, it did sit for awhile but when i got it there was about 1/4 tank of old gas. i put in 93 in it and filled the tank and used half a can of sea foam engine cleaner. no change. ran it for about 3 hours with new gas and cleaner

If it is a 2008 it is fuel injected not carb. look it over real good to see if there is a vacuum line that is broken or just leaky connection. It sounds like anvacuum leak and running very lean.

Iseb87 octane not 93.. Also add seafoam to the gas.

2008 is fuel injected. Very few problems historically with these bikes. Read the entire link below and note the section on the vacuum line. I've never had a problem with mine. I would remove the fuel tank and clean it thoroughly. If the pipes are aftermarket you might have a gasket leak at the header. Also, don't try to run it without the air filter. Also make sure that your O2 sensors are connected on both header pipes. Often folks with fuel injected road Stars try to add an aftermarket fuel processor. If yours has one, remove it and run the OEM ECU instead. It will totally compensate for any intake or exhaust modifications.
