  • New guy from San Antonio

Hello everyone! Isaac here. I just bought my first Roadstar. Stumbled across this site while looking for a speedometer assembly, as mine appears to be bad (ODO inop and gas light flashes). Shes a 03 XV1600ALER Limited. Shes got a few minor problems but overall in great condition.

The problems Ive noticed so far:
Oil leaks from what appears to be the primary cover, around the shift bar, and not sure where else yet.
ODO inop and gas light flashes.
Seat latch release cable is worn out. It moves a little bit when I just hold the catch mechanism side in my hand and provide resistance when I turn the key but im guessing not enough. The key only turns about a millimeter. Not sure if its the cable or the ignition switch.
Need to get a new horn and also kickstand safety switch
Missing bolt from the primary cover on the Left side.
    Passenger back rest loose

But hey for $1000 and she rides awesome, Im happy.

Welcome aboard! There is a wealth of information here and I'm sure you'll get this thing back in great riding condition soon. Luckily you have far better weather to ride in right now.

If you don't have one yet, here's a link to a service manual that will help you out.

Went and checked them out but none of the three list my model (xv16aler). Does it matter?

medic67, I believe that first link for the 99-03 would be the one you need. The ALER I believe has more to do with finish and add-ons. So a midnight with blacked out motor for example. Soft, hard, or no bags. The diagnostics and drive train components should all be similar across models.

Welcome to the clinic. The oil seal is very easy to replace. Lube your key and ignition hole with graphite, lube the seat mechanism and you can also attach a wire to the seat mechanism that hangs behind the engine so that you can just pull on the wire instead of having to operate the key.

Mine has 2 horns but it's an '06, idk if that makes a difference. Your other issues are common to these bikes. Easy shit to deal with, or just ride it as is. No step for a stepper.

Besides the oil leaks and the seat I would just ride. Buuut the Army says I gotta get that stuff fixed to be allowed to ride. Lol

I hope you aren't stationed at Fort Hood. Do you still have to wear a reflective vest to ride on post?

Shes now popping starter solenoid fuses on the hot side...
checked all accessible around the battery box for exposed wires, but found very little in that regard (thinned insulation but not exposed). I still tapped them up.
i havent gone so far as to pull the tanks and check there nor untape anything already tapped. Wanted to see if that fixed it first.

Do you guys know of anything that could be pulling too much power to blow the 30 amp from the starter solenoid on the hot side? Save me the hassle of tracing the wore so much

The starter itself, pull it and open it up and dump out the dust and lube it, Also check the connections, battery ground to frame, wires at the solenoid and at the starter. That's just a starting place.

First, get a service manual.Got mine off Ebay for about $40 in '05. It's been worth it's weight in gold at least 100 times !
Second, San Antonio is in some of the most awesomest riding country anywhere.
                                  Enjoy the ride !!
I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !
