  • Hello from Florida.

    Hey guys, I live in South Florida and just got a nice Road Star with low miles. I recently upgraded the tires to Michelin Commander 2's. The tube in the front tire was bad or wasn't installed correctly so it went flat on me while breaking them in. At around 40 miles, I felt a drag and thought it might be the motor having issues (since I had never experienced that before) and went down before being able to stop on the shoulder. I was wearing my gear so it protected me from major road rash, but the bike was damaged. I am looking to replace the parts that got scraped up (pipes, bags, handlebars, crash bar, etc). I'd like to get SOME MAG WHEELS so I don't have to worry about issues with inner tubes again. I really don't want to crash again because of a flat tire. I've never had any issue on my other bike that has mag wheels. Any help would be great.

    I need to know if mag wheels from a Road Star XV1700 or other model bike would be compatible with my bike. I currently have the stock 16 inch spoke rims.

    yes they will swap over but you need the wheel spacers for those wheels as well.

    but you can seal those wheels as well if you prefer the spoked wheels.

      Thanks for the info. I need to inspect the front tire, rim and tube to see what exactly went wrong. I would feel much safer with mag wheels. They look cooler too.

      Let me be “that guy” and say that nothing looks cooler than chrome spoked wheels. Being put together with human hands adds to the soul of the bike. I plan on buying a sealed fat spoke 19 inch front rim once I win the lottery.

    from Puyallup, WA. I had a close call with a front flat.....after hot rodding last summer in some northern Oregon canyons, it went flat during the night. Took all day to drive it to get fixed and immediately bought some mags from a member here once I got home. The mags go on next tire change, in about 5K more miles.

      I actually went about a half mile before realizing it wasn't the motor and I needed to stop because the tire was going flat. It really sucked when the bead broke. I dumped the bike and rolled, bouncing from shoulder to shoulder until I stopped. It was weird. Other than my bad knee scrapes, it wasn't that bad. I really want mags now. LOL

    Representing Scorpion Gulch, Arizona. Sounds like the tube got pinched on install. Don't blame the wheel. I have ran tubes for 6 years with no issues.

      I am going to investigate that and keep that in mind regarding all future tire replacements. Either way; I know what that drag feeling is and I'll make a quick stop if I ever feel that again. Dumping the bike sucks. Buying parts to make it pretty again is also going to suck.

        You got to watch some mechanics like a hawk! Lyndon had new tires and tubes put on his bike before this Summer's Northwest starfest and purchased everything online. The box indicated that the front tube was the correct size so the mechanic went ahead and installed it. Turns out it was a 110 tube in a 130 box. The tube split and failed on him in Orofino, Idaho.

          Yes, run mags and instead of lead weights, install Ride On which not only balances but provides great puncture protection. Check out their website video if you haven't already. I even run it in my tubes which is recommended.

            I ordered the Ride on and got it already. Once I get the mags, I will use it. I guess you use 20-25% more if you go without weights.

          You'll never regret going to cast wheels. Spokes look good, but they're real heavy. Your scooter will drive much better with alloy wheels.
          And, you won't have to jack with those f'ing tubes !
          Enjoy the ride !!
          I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !

            I ordered some mag wheels for an XV1700 and I am getting them chromed. I have to wait about 30-45 days to get them, but thy should be great.

            You’ll love it. Instructions say use without lead weights. I think the chart says for our bikes 8oz in the front and 9oz in the rear. More for off road conditions with more potential for road hazards. No need to put too much in as that will result in what JD calls “excessive unsprung weight” which will effect handling.
