So, what's going on with your scooter ?
    From Zimasfriend:
I have an 05 Roadstar xv1700amt and it has always had a sharp ticking noise which it's had since new. But...Sunday I was coming home from a ride and my bike (Capricieux..I named it) started acting up. 1) My speedometer and gas gauge went psycho, the instrument lights quit working then 2) about 4 miles later it started a loud grinding noise from the crankshaft area.
Today I tested my battery and it was only 87% charged but it had 13V. I put it on the charger while I checked all fuses, all connectors and wires. They were all good. So, makes me wonder if the stator is going bad? The battery is only a year old.
Next, I started it and took my stethoscope (yep...was a nurse lol) and checked to see if the noise was coming from my gear box or Crankshaft area. DEFINITELY coming from the crankshaft area...horrible grinding! Not the "normal"...but HOPEFULLY not a rod bearing!
I am going to warm it up tomorrow (while I hold my breath) and change the oil to see if there is any metal in it.
Has anyone else had this issue? BTW..my bike has 21000 on it. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Video/audio of bike running would help...

change oil be sure to use good quality synthetic vtwin oil and good filter

does it "feel" different or down on power?

Hey Lug Nut. I will upload an audio file when I warm it up to do the oil change. I need to wait until Monday when Yamaha is open to get the oil & filter.
Truthfully, it started the bad grinding JUST as I was 1/2 block from my parking lot so I coasted then parked it because if it is a bearing, I didn't want to do more damage. I started it long enough yesterday to pin point the exact location. It's definately inside the crankshaft plate. Hopefully there's no metal in the oil when I change it. I'll upload a picture of where it's coming from as soon as I figure out how to.

PepBoys has Mobil 1 synthetic MC oil and any auto store has the filter. Often Orielly does too. NAPA often has Amsoil synthetic MC oil and Mobil 1. Those are the two brands most often used here. Filter options listed on the “Newbies” thread I sent you. Is it noisy when in neutral and not rolling? Left or right side case? I wouldn’t waste money on an oil change until you diagnose the noise.

It's noisy just sitting in neutral. Worse when I let out the clutch. It's only on the right side. It really needs an oil change anyways so I'm going to go ahead and do that. Thank you for all your information Shores. I'm going to go check the hub bolt that Duke posted about. Makes alot of since to what's going on with it. I'll be back to let everyone know if that is what it is. I really hope that's the noise I'm hearing!

If the noise is coming from the area you pictured, you might check the generator / starter hub bolt for being loose.

Thanks Duke! That actually makes more since with what was going on that day. My electrical components were going crazy. (Speedometer, gas gauge, panel lights) I thought it was two separate issues but if it's that hub bolt it would cause all of it! I'm going to go check it right now!

Don't do an oil change yet! Pull the covers on the right side of the bike first and inspect. Will likely need a new gasket when pulling cam cover (mine wasn't torn up too bad and just used some Permatex ultra grey). Definitely look at the gears and the hub bolt.

Pulling the generator cover right now. LEARNING (LOL) while I'm at it. Oil went everywhere when I cracked the cover...SOOO I learned. Haha. Waiting for it to finish draining now that I put a pan under it.

          Ok...I have a question.
There is alot of resistance pulling the generator cover, like a magnet pulling it back on or something. Has anyone here pulled this cover before? I appreciate learning LOL but I don't want to be surprised by something popping out at me or me breaking something. Anyone??

Ok. Got the cover off and the bolt is good and tight and the gears look great. Onto the next cover..

I posted under Engine noise what I did today, but here's a recap. LOL
Checked the generator bolt...bolt and gears look good. Checked the gears under the crankshaft cover, same thing..looks good.
Started draining the gear oil and it looks like it was blessed with Pixi dust! LOTS of metal shavings. I have to say that I'm glad I was wrong in it being an engine problem. Tomorrow I'm going to tear into it and see what happened. TBC Goodnight everyone and thank you to everyone who gave me input! Much appreciated!!
