  • Tool to remove stubborn gear box fill plug.

I was given the best tip ever received for removing that gear box cover fill plug. I’m sharing this to save you the frustration I went though. Use an impact with the socket tool shown in this picture attached. This is for that slotted plug put in earlier models. May have to grind down the bit about a 1/64”. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I just found a big washer and wrapped it in tape, easy peasy.

Yah, that’s the plug I’m talking about roadiemort.

I tried that as well but darn thing was on too tight. Impact was the only thing that worked in my case but I did hear the washer worked well for others. I just wanted to add a helpful tip. Thanks for the reply

This will also work if it is on too tight to remove with a washer.

Yah, I got that one too. B-30 drag link but I don’t think it’s a Williams brand. Impact was the only way I could get that plug out. I soaked it in PB blast over night but finally got it off. Can’t stand dirty oil if you know what I mean. Thanks for the info, appreciate ya!

That's a bummer it was so tight, its got an "O" ring so it shouldn't leak, doesn't need torqued down like crazy... I had a piece of aluminum bar about the size of the plug and just ground/filed it to fit the slot, put a 10" adjustable wrench on it and voila!

When I finally got the plug out the old prong was smashed down pretty good. I agree that too much torque can be the cause of not getting the plug out in the first place. Thanks for the input D-Fresh

I was going to try that timing wrench but I wasn’t for sure if the metal strength was hard enough. I believe the vibration from the impact wrench loosened up some crud in the threads. Once I finally removed the plug the threads were in tact but just dirty. I appreciate the input, will have to add that wrench to my tool list. Thanks Lug Nut

when you reinstall the plug oil the oring just like you oil a oil filter gasket. Just like a oil filter if you don't lube the gasket it will be hell getting off the next time.
