A mate gave me his roadstar to maintain as he has pancreatic cancer and just cant lift or work on it. SO I have registered it and starting to tackle the oil leaks. Comes with a set of Harley Mufflers which scrape the ground at every right hand corner. But never mind what gets me is the kachuff the thing has at idle and the low rpm at speed. amazing bike to ride. Not fond of the air rushing up mu nose behind the shield, must find something that fixes that too. Regards Keith.

    Hey Keith!

And sorry to hear about your mate's illness.

If your bike has oil leaks, it's because of those Harley pipes! All Harley's leak oil, LOL.

    Roadstars don't.

Seriously, they rarely leak. Where's it coming from? Do you have photos?

The 'kachuff' at idle may or may not be normal. Is it puffing and backfiring? Any idea how fast it's actually idling, the RPM? May need a simple adjustment on the carb.

And when you refer to low RPM at speed, how low exactly? Do you hit the rev limiter where it just cuts out while running higher RPM? Depends on what year you have, because the earlier models are rev-limited at only 4250 RPM. Easy to hit that limiter, especially if you came off a crotch-rocket or similar, like I did. My previous bike redlined at 12,000 RPM.

Welcome once again, and fill us in a bit more, starting with the model year and oil leaks.

Oh, and about the air up your nose behind the windshield? Just do what I do and take the damned thing off. Then you get air everywhere, not just up your nose!

Thankyou Midnightride for the welcome, Ah yes those Harley mufflers must be causing the star to be corrupted and leak oil. It appears tobe around the oil tank and the output shaft for the belt pulley. I'm cleaning the dirty oil off everything at the moment. But the oil drip line appeared to be on the back side of the pulley making me think i should replace the o ring and oil seal of that shaft. Does the shaft pass through the oil tank by chance? As the oil drip I found doesn't seem to smell like gear oil so having checked the schematic for the pulley shaft I cant see if it passes through that oil tank. there is no seal on the right side of that shaft only the pulley side shaft seems to carry a seal and O ring. now it's up on jacks and level no oil is present after the clean up job. I serviced the engine and replaced the crush washers on both the engine and tank sump plugs they were flat as and too thin to be reused. After a short ride I found it dripping a minute amount of oil at the back under the bottom pulley cover bolt and the frame back there. after I cleaned the seal there are no wittness marks for the oil. 2litres in and run bike and then 2 more foe the tank. litres and quarts are close I believe. Yes I may have to unhook that shield and try it without. LOL. That Kachuff is the 48* 113mm stroke combo making so much lovely noise. Not a source of grief but pleasure.

Welcome mate, from a fellow Aussie from the Vic-NSW border area.

With your screen, just adjust the height and angle of the shield so that you can just see over it.

They are great for the rain and bugs, the Road* is the first shield that I have had on a bike, and I don't think I would go back to a naked bike again
