  • New Roadie from Fl.

Great website, looking forward to this project.
Day one: Had a chance to wash the road star today. Since it has been sitting outside for a few years, any suggestions on getting back on the road? I have removed all fuel components, started to rebuild carb, replaced filter/pump, checked the fuel lines pulled/checked plugs, hope to have everything back in order by next week. Plan on replacing the tires/brakes before hitting the road.

Has anyone else had their intake crack, noticed this when cleaning it today (see pic). I have a replacement coming.

Glad to see your taking safety seriously by changing the tires and brakes. They are the 2 most important items on a bike. You should also bleed out the brakes with new fluid while you are at it.

Looks like you are well on your way to lots of fun miles.

from Ohio. The intakes crack from the heat but it doesn't mean it's bad or leaking, there's metal inside the rubber. When you get your new one, go ahead and surface the flanges nice and flat. Lay a piece of fine sandpaper down on a flat surface and spray with water, tgen place a flange flat down on it and make figure 8 motions until it's nice and flat and uniform. Do this to both sides to ensure a better seal. You might as well take a Dremel and round out the corners on the inside of the manifold, where it turns towards the cylinders from the center carb hole. You'll be happy that you did. And it's free horsepower.

Curt a member here made several, maybe hundreds, of ported intakes. The last I heard he was teaching someone else how to do it. You can do it yourself also.

Drain and refill the transfer case.
Suck(or absorb with paper towels)the old brake fluid out of the front and rear master cylinders and replace with fresh. Bleed the brakes being careful to keep the MC’s topped off to avoid any air in the lines.
I’d recommend RideOn in the new tires. Remove any old weights on the wheels. RideOn works as well in tubes, as it does in tubeless.
You can use some good black shoe polish to clean and shine the bags.
Repack the bearings in the neck.

First thing to do is go to your RSC User Profile and fill in the info on your bike. Makes it easier for others to help you when you have questions. They may all look the same on the surface, but there are differences in the year models you may encounter when playing mix and match with parts. You don't need the fuel pump, there are directives here to show you how to delete it, you lose 13 pounds off the left side of your bike plus it gets more air to the cylinders. It's an inexpensive mod to do. I have run no pump 4 years now with no issues, many others here with carbed bikes have went that was as well. I also recommend the Ride-On Tire Beads, I have them in tube type tires and they keep the tires balanced as they wear. With lead, the tire is balanced when it's new, but as the tire wears things change and the lead can't compensate like the beads will. A worthwhile investment.
