Hey All,

I've been riding many years, mostly standard naked metric bikes, usually 2 in the garage so I can work on one and ride the other. Tried out my first cruiser 2 years ago, a Boulevard, not bad but kind of boring. Sold it 2 weeks ago and saw this '06 Roadsstar 1700A with 30k miles on it. Decent shape, needs a bit of work, nothing serious I believe - for 2900. Bought it.

Did the most basic maintenance, cleaned it up and rode it for a couple of tanks now.

Love the engine. Now that won't get boring anytime soon!

Its got V&H Longshots on it, and also the quiet baffles (I pulled them to check). still too loud for my taste, so I'll try the super quiets. Hope to get away without rejetting.

It seems a bit loose on the steering, espesially in corners and when I get on the gas. Going to replace the head bearings, new tires and wheel bearings while I'm at it.

It came with a smallish windshield, seems like a OEM deal, mount has the Star logo on it. Gave me turbulence so I took it off but I want a good windshield. Will the Silverado windshield fit, or should I just go with an aftermarket? I hate buffetting iit drives me nuts. 6ft2. What would you guys recommend?

Also trying to figure out how to navigate this forum. Apologies if these questions have been answered I just havent got my mind around this thing.

From Texarkana, USA. I use a Memphis Shade's Slim windshield on my R*. When I bought it, it had a 21" Memphis Fats on it, I didn't like looking through it and cut it down to around 15". About a month later i ordered the 15" Memphis Slim and I like it. I am only 67" tall so I don't need a big shield. It's a quick disconnect and comes off in a couple of seconds.

That's a nice looking bike you picked up. I like the couch in the garage. Is that so you can comfortably sit and admire your bikes while you decide what to do to them next? Or is that where you sleep when the wife thinks you spend more time with the bikes than her?

Post a pic of the windshield and that may help. For me personally, I found adding lower wind deflectors really made the ride more pleasant when the windscreen is on.

thanks for the warm welcomes and the windshield recommendations. Jaybo I like your Clearview, seems like the perfect size.

Here's a pic of the one that came with my bike- as I said it looks very much OEM but I haven't seen this anywhere else. Maybe the brackets (mount below top clamp/triple) would even fit the Clearview?

PS SouthernCruizer that is my 919 'MamaSan'. I picked her up on 6/16/16 from the street and gave her a new home. She has been faithful to me ever since.

Yes, it should fit the factory mounts. They will be able to tell you about fitment as far as what works, should not be an issue at all. I did get the light tinted one on my last one, and its perfect.

do I have a midnight star? I thought they have the studded seats. Also label on steering head says 2006, code under seat if 5VNF.

Sorry I'm trying to figure out what I got myself into! Or maybe its a XV1700A roadstar that somehow ended up with a midnight star windshield?

I think I need a drink.

5VNF is not a midnight 06 RoadStar with a 1700. It's just a trim package, though. The user manual below is for like 5 different bikes

Representing Scorpion Gulch, Arizona. The Rifle brand windshield was recommended to me to address the buffeting issue. I have the vented recurve one. While it does reduce buffeting, it won't eliminate it. I was a little disappointed in it.

I had Yamaha's small windshield (in avatar pic) when first got the bike. I think they called it "The Boulevard" if I'm not mistaken. Now I have a detachable SwitchBlade cut down a bit to throw wind up and over.

yeah exacly that's the one! Mystery solved. (Irony I just sold my Suzuki Boulevard a couple of weeks ago and I'm glad I did)
It looks real good but can't stand the buffet. May I ask which switchblade you got and how much you cut it down? I'm looking at the 16in 'chopped' one just eyeballing it seems about right.

Been riding. Frontend feels bad, got the steering head bearings from All Balls PN 1004, going in over the weekend, also will rebuild the forks. New plugs and brake pads while I'm at it and we'll see where I end up when the weekend is over. Cleaning up the AIS on the side.

Exhaust wise I got the big city thunder quiet inserts today and man they sound good in the longshots and less backfiring. Adjusting the idle is still touchy. No idea what jets are in the carb but that will be another thing once I'm through with steering suspension and brakes.

Sorry, it's been so many years I can't remember how I acquired it. Certainly wasn't new, I'd remember that. Also don't know which model it is to help steer you in the right direction. Didn't even know there were various models. I'm a lot of help!
After I installed it, all I knew to do was cut it down to where you are looking over it versus thru it, to be most effective. I guess I cut it down to nose level (about 4 inches). Works great and I love that it's detachable. Mostly run without a windsheild except on road trips.

If by "Cleaning up the AIS on the side", you mean removing it, that will most likely take care of any remaining backfiring.
