  • Long time Yamaha owner, First time Road Star rider

Sometimes, ya just have to follow your intuition. The first time I saw the bike it was under a cover. Couldn't tell what kind of bike it was. The owner said, "Ya want it?". I was at his "yard" sale to pick up a completely different item. Being mostly broke and not really needing another motorcycle, I told him that I wasn't interested. That night, I woke up from a sound sleep almost shaking. There was something about the way he said, "Ya want it?" I contacted him the next morning to talk about the bike. He told me a story of being on a ride with his uncle. His uncle went down hard. Coma, brain damage, the works. The experience left him and his wife wanting to never ride again. So the bike sat for over twelve years. He even stopped making payments on it, but the lender never came to repossess it. So I asked him what it would take to get it off his hands. He says, 'Come get it, I'll GIVE it to you." I said, "What is it?". That's when he told me that it was a 1999 Road Star Silverado. I showed up at his door step a couple hours later with a trailer to haul it away. Saw it for the first time when we loaded it onto the trailer. MINT, SHOWROOM condition. 6600 miles. Dead battery. No title. Elusive lien holder. The DMV has been a nightmare, but I'm used to that. (Why is it always Yamahas?).

Looks like the folks here are going to be a wealth of knowledge and help. Glad to be aboard.

BTW... the serial number of this Road Star is 000053. I'm wondering if it is something special with that low of a production serial number...

Wouldn't spend a Dime on it until you get a valid title in your name. Problem is.... If you keep pursuing the title the leinholder company may get alerted and come take it. Just be prepared for that.

Would be great as a parts bike...

So far, my dealings with the DMV have been lengthy but are starting to come together. I'm currently waiting for the last piece of the puzzle. That would be unopened Certified Letters to the lien holder of record, and any successor bank that had bought the original loan. The last one is currently on its way back to me unopened. "RETURN TO SENDER, ADDRESS UNKNOWN" was the tracking notification. Fortunately, the DMV website has a list of failed banks and their last known addresses. The original lien holder and the successors are on this list! These unopened Certified Letters show the DMV that I have attempted to satisfy the lien. With the returned letters in hand, the DMV will remove the lien from the title.

Isn't there also a statute of limitations that might be to your advantage since it's been so many years?

Not really. If there is a lien holder of record, one must do the due diligence in locating them and attempt to satisfy the lien, or beg them to forgive/release it.. If the lien holder, (or any successor), can't be located, the DMV will remove the lien holder from the title.

Representing Scorpion Gulch, Arizona. You are golden with your legwork on the title. Due Diligence, yea, you're all over it. Just a matter of time now. I have done this several times. I never let a screwy title situation scare me. It's a great bargaining chip if you have to pay for the bike. Only way you could have beat your deal is if he paid you to haul it off.

Over the years I've learned that a big smile and a pleasant attitude works wonders with grumpy DMV workers! But I will admit that if the engine number doesn't match the title, things tend to get ugly. I always check!

Big smile and throw in the phrase "I just want to pay the taxes" somewhere.

from Solon, IA. I hope things get settled out as you plan. If so, you're going to have a great bike for little $$. Obviously it will need some TLC and work to get things in proper riding order, but nothing that should shy you away.
