  • Hello from Pasadena, CA

Matt. I work at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory helping get robotic spacecraft to Mars and beyond. Son-in-law (Bill) and I both ride 2004 RoadStar 1700XV's in Pearl White. His (since he is SSGT Rice, USMC) needed LOUD pipes, the K&M air filter, beach bars, Baron's adjustable needle, changed main jet, pilot, drilled out the bar weights, customized a curved plate and frame to match the lines on the bike. Mine is more classic cruiser with platforms front and rear, windshield, small extensions up 2" and back 1 1/2" for my shorter 5' 9" frame so cruising is comfortable. Put Shinko 770's on because the whitewall looks terrific with the pearl white paint. We both converted to high intensity LED's in the existing headlight housing. I've got the Yamaha bags, he has other off-brands. He already got the GL shock improvement. Our friend Smokescreens is doing mine as I type this. We've cruised Hwy 2 in Ca and Hwy 1 from Ventura up through Big Sur (beautiful) to Pacific Grove, then up through Monterey to Santa Cruz and San Francisco. Got good footage of us cruising across the Golden Gate Bridge then getting the heck out of there before S.F. nuttiness catches up to us.

We've been picking different directions to cruise - out through the desert, mountains, coast. Any day on the bikes in nice weather is a good day and working on them gives us something to do together. We had rented HD's before from Eagle Rider for trips up through Big Sur but found that our RoadStar's are every bit as good, less expensive to maintain and with the Baron's mods, getting about 200 miles out of a full tank.

The SF trip was fun as we had our wives and his daughter (our first granddaughter) along in a car so we looked like a police escort for them.

I use the bike to get to various meetings around Los Angeles but it's a little hairy splitting lanes with some folks on the 210 and 110 wanting to hit you as you go by (slowly, not lunatic speeds). Sad to see bike accidents in the area. Sometimes the rider is being dumb but sadly sometimes the drivers literally turn into the bikes. Had a few harrowing escapes to and from JPL.

In busy LA traffic I think loud pipes make sense as a safety warning. Some folks move a bit to give room and others squeeze but generally you know with a bit more advanced notice when your exhaust announces your presence (and LED light helps too).

Representing Scorpion Gulch, Arizona. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know the Road Star is a great bike!

Great looking bike. Looks very badass. Son-in-law (USMC SSGT Rice) looks similar except he customized a curved plate frame and light for the license so it matches the contour of the rear fender. Your bike will inspire him to keep finding those improvements to make a great bike even greater. When I rode up Big Sur last time I was wearing my, "It *is* actually rocket science" shirt that contains the equations for gravity assist trajectory space flight. Kind of a bonus. Seriously the color scheme and trim on your bike looks legendary.

Well Thank you. It's a retro styled bike, all I have done is push it even more retro.

from your neighbor upstairs in Nor Cal. A Wolo Bad Boy 124 db horn is an absolute must for lane splitting and oblivious drivers in general. I keep my thumb covering the horn button at all times when lane splitting. If they don't hear your pipes or see you in their mirrors, the Bad Boy will definitely get their attention. And if you don't already have them, passing lamps really help you stand out. I keep my high beam on in the daytime too, since its' more likely to hit their mirrors. The other thing I've always wanted to do for lane splitting is wire my passing lamps with a "wig wag" mode. So they flash from side to side like police bikes do. Studies show drivers are more likely to notice a flashing light. You could even go with ambers if you wanted to look a little more "official". Being a rocket scientist and all, I'm sure you'd have not trouble figuring it out. If you do go that way, just be sure to post a how-to, here on the Clinic.
