  • Drive belts?

I'm just curious, what types of drive belts have been working good for everyone. Good ones, Bad ones?

Anyone ever use Hardline, or Panther belts?

I'd stay away from the Panthers, I've seem mixed reviews. Most all OE belts are made by Gates and they make an aftermarket belt for S&S that's stronger than stock and way cheaper than Yamaha OE. Check out S&S Carbon Kevlar High Strength belts.

Thanks Doc. I'm just evaluating all the different belts and everyones opinions. I'm not a fan of the oem belts because of the chirp sounds that eventually happens. I've been running the Panther belts for years and so far, I have no complaints. I'm thinking about replacing a belt and been looking at different ones.
I've notice a belt named Hardline but not sure about it, and who makes it.
I'll check out that Kevlar high strength belt.

Good to know about the Panthers, I know there less expensive, so that's good.

Hey Duke Gates Carbon are highly recommended on my Skidoo 1200 4 stroke due to high torque. When my oem gets used I will be switching but I have no experience just by going what I have been reading from the reliable guys on the skidoo forum. Must be made similar for Road bikes. JC

I have a Gates on my 03. It now has 30k + or - miles and no problems.

              Thanks highvoltage.
I have 30k miles on a Panther belt for my 2001 RS, and going to change the one on my 2000 RS for a sprocket size change needing a 128 tooth belt. Just weighing my options.

Replaced the stock belt on my '06 in '09 due to a rock making a hole in it. Went with a Panther and still running it.

I don't know if this input will help you but ive seen a lot of research on Gate, Dayco vs OE belts for sleds. The gates and dayco will last longer beacuse they use a harder rubber but actually in turn started to wear the primary and secondary sheaves because they are so hard. The belt should be the sacrificial part not the drive line, just my 2 cents. I think that may apply to the motorcycle drive belts as well although I know that we dont have CV clutch drive lines. I personally would probably stay with OEM yamaha.

                  Thank you Cubo55.
Would you know if Dayco makes the Panther belt? I was thinking one of my old Panther belts said Dayco on it.

Ya Dayco should make a belt for a panther for sure, they do most old machines too

How long do belts typically last? Do you wait for belt failure to replace? I'm at just under 60k miles, when should I start thinking about a replacement?

I've read that some people are putting over 100k miles on the stock belt.
