  • Gasket question

When i replace my rocker arm shafts can the gaskets be reused both the valve cover and the rockerbox to head gasket, its over a hundred for the four

  • #2
I reused my cover gaskets dry and one leaked. Bought new ones and sprayed them with Permatex copper gasket spray. Sealed very will. I’m sure I could have used the only ones if I had sprayed them.

I have reused mine a couple times. The spray will help to make sure they seal. Also make sure you use an inch lbs Tq wrench and tq to spec when tightening the bolts they will strip threads real easy if overtightened.

Rather than try shim the rockers i took a shot and bought two complete used rockerboxes just got them today, 75.00 for both and just under 8,000 on them, rockers nice and tight between the saddles, the inner shafts are already showing wear, the only way oil can get between the shaft and rocker is by seeping in, i might make a small hole in top of the rocker arm for oil to drip down in there no wonder they wear out so quick, they're oil starved, the clearance on mine .004 to .006 not much space for oil to seep in

Congrats on the nice score. My personal theory is it might be due to some people turning their idle way down to get that Harley lope and they starve the top end of oil. I keep my idle around 1000 rpms just to be safe. It's also another reason for using the correct spec oil with enough ZDDP. I'm sure there are plenty of owners who don't know any better and cheap out on the oil. It's the only real downside to buying a used R*; you never know what the guy[s] before you did to it, and damage like that can take tens of thousands of miles to show up, so they don't even realize their harming their motors. It's the R*'s one Achilles' heel.

As for the gaskets I've reused mine numerous times with no leaks. Just make sure the gaskets, along with the mating surfaces, are absolutely clean and dry when you put everything back together.
