  • key hard to turn

I've been having an issue the the ignition key sometimes, i have to play with it to get it to turn on. Is there any spray lube to squirt down in there to get it to better?

I 2nd the graphite dry lube. WD40 and such collect grime and jell with moisture.

If the lube don't work could be that the key itself is worn out and not retracting the tumblers back all the way. I've taken the ignition cylinder out, insert the key and see what tumbler isn't retracting. then file it down flat to the ign cylinder body. it don't take much for it to catch and mess with it turning.

I had a problem with a locking gas filler door on my last Toyota pick up It wouldn't unlock some times like there was dirt in the tumblers. Eventually sometimes turned into all the time and with no way to unlock the gas filler door I wasn't able to add fuel. I Sprayed an electrical contact cleaner inside the key slot several times and it freed up the tumblers enough to open the lock. I then remover the lock from the door and sprayed the shit out of it with the contact cleaner and kept blowing it out with compressed air. The more i did this the freer the lock became, After it was clean i put a few drops pf 3&1 oil and it worked like new again. Not a big fan of graphite lube

The wife and I rode from Florida’s east coast to left coast one day (for lunch of course). I had been having trouble with my key starting the bike. Well after lunch I couldn’t jiggle it enough to start it. Finally got the key just right and headed to a locksmith. He was able to make a key with the edges that worked!! Might try that.

My bike is the same age as yours, but with way more miles. I had to replace my ignition recently, it was doing what you are describing. Finally got to the point where I was concerned it might not start if I was away from home and shut it off. If you take it to the dealer it's roughly $500.00 out the door.

It's 2020, we need aftermarket fingerprint ignition switches!

I have a fingerprint padlock on my shed and it's a pc of garbage. sometimes it takes 20-30 try's before it opens.

J89K I just got it and haven't decided what I want to replace it with yet. Hell I might have to cut it off and want to have some sort of keyless lock to put back on. I don't go in there much in the winter so not that big of a deal right now.

I am going to try the spray first, then the locksmith, but first gotta find a decompression solenoid i can afford, jeeeeeeeeees!

I would try one of the motorcycle junk yards like Pinwall cycle. The new ones are ridiculous price on the decomp solenoid

I wish they made that compression release manual like maybe a cable or a lever, if mine ever fails i i would try to design something i could nudge with my foot to push that spoon in on the cam cover, its spring loaded so it will release on its own with no pressure on it

I've been thinking about that same thing. Just checked the solenoid again and it seems to work 95% of the time, so maybe it is a weak starter. I have been thinking about upgrading the stater wires to something heavier. I believe i have read that the road star warrior starter is much stronger, anybody know if it will fit the road star?

Warrior starter will fit. why not just rebuild your stock starter?

Shock starter is like 800watt, warrior is 900, or so it says in the article i just read. Rebuild kit is about 20 bucks, but if the magnets are loose then that is a whole nuther ball of crap. I found a warrior starter for about 120 used and am looking for a rebuild kit for it, and if i find one, i might just get it.

If the magnets are loose all you have to do is epoxy them back in place.

I checked the manual for the warrior and it confirms 9kw. I also found it interesting that it has a 31amp charging system. I wonder how we can find out if that stator and reg/rc is compatible with the 1600/1700's. The Warrior engine is basically just a 1700 with a different head design and FI.

Have your checked your battery cables? Always best to eliminate the simplest and most likely possibilities before going deep.

i just had the positive cable off to wire in new gauges so i know it is clean and tight. I think i have had this problem since i have owned the bike, just had no point of reference as to what is good or bad cranking. Now back to shopping for kit for the warrior stater.

I just installed the upgraded cables and wow, she spins like crazy, so i think i am good, thanks davej for the wires. I also bent the spoon closer to the solenoid while i was right there. I think the bike has always had this issue, but not having owned one before i had no real idea. Thanks alot for all the help. And i am going to try the spray and see if that free's it up some.
