  • BMW RAP

    Now that i have the goldwing shock ive been going crazy looking to buy the manual pump off a bmw shock, everyone i see is only sold with the shock connected to it, i may have to use the electric pump that came on the honda shock

    If you can get one cheap enough with the shock buy it. Thats how I got mine. I think if was off an 1150 or 1100 used the hose and rap, chucked the shock in the steel bin at work cause it was done for. JC

      If for some reason the roadwing shock loses pressure and the shock bottoms can the bike be ridden home safely

      I did. Im only 160lbs. So my roadwing consist of a goldwing shock and the roadwing spring. But I originally had goldwing shock and spring, but it was to stiff. During the swap I damaged the damper and didn’t notice. First big bump and it blow out on the test ride. Was able to ride home safely just a little bouncy.

        Any BMW rap with banjo fitting end will work. Seems some have used one off a Bergman 650 scooter too.

          Is the roadstar coil spring supposed be transfered to the honda shock ? I didn't see that part on the instructions. Im 200lbs should i use the yamaha coil or just use the honda shock as is. You think you might have over extended the shock for it blow the seal.

            No! Remove the old shock and spring and toss in garbage. You need the shock and spring from the appropriate year Goldwing (1800) you can follow the in depth tutorial on this site to install in the shock mount. Manual rap is best imho. Also there are instructions on how to add fluid...what kind of fluid....how to bleed it etc...

              Even the Roadwing without any preload is better than stock shock. I could not believe the difference how well it goes with the Roadstar. The rap is great especially when either my son or my wife gets on. A couple of turns and smooth riding!

                I would go with the manual rap but i can't find one i can afford ,the shock i got for the 40.00 came with the electric pump and looks to be in excellent shape so ill probably use it until i find a cheap manual rap. I notice a lot of people on this forum assume others have unlimited financial resources. I got lucky the ebay seller accepted my 40 dollar offer for the complete shock assemble or i wouldn't even have that. So far on this bike. iv had to buy all 4 wheel bearings and seals, steering bearings, clutch pressure plate, star brand passing lamps and mounting bar, carb gasket and float needle and seat, alt cover gasket, clutch cover gasket. Oil filter housing gasket, 4 qts amsoil, oil and fuel filter, fuel gauge sender, 2 new tires, new oem brake pads front and rear. Tachometer, and i Don't think im done yet. I know when its done i can take month long trips without worry

                  I did the same as someone earlier, bought the BMW rap and shock and chucked the shock. Well, it's actually in the garage if anyone needs a BMW shock without a RAP.

                So if it develops a leak the damper craps out the bike is still safe enough to ride with no damping at all?

                  My wife and I road home on an empty shock (about 1500 miles) when I damaged my hydraulic line. It still road smoother than a hardtail, not a lot but some. Just had to watch the bumps and the corners because our ground clearance was low and we would get the frame down before anything else.

                Stock spring with blown shock 2 up is safe to ride, based on riding experience. It will mess up the rear tire though!!

                  If the fender dropped down on the tire then the nitrogen gas leaked out. I was talking about only loosing hydraulics which only controls damping

                    The shock does not support the weight of the bike, it only dampens the bounce. All of the bikes weight is supported by the spring.

                      I would be suspect of a $40 goldwing shock....sure it's from an 1800 and complete with spring etc?

                      why did you install a tachometer? I hope you did not use an OEM clutch spring...pointless. An EBC spring is better but not as good as a Barnett spring conversion kit.

                        I got a seller to seperate one off a shock for 30.00 shipped, should have it in a few days, looks like theres a scale printed on the sleeve so i will know which positions work best for given situation. So far i spent 40 for the shock 30.00 for a controller and 20.00 for bushings and shims, so i figure under a hundred for the whole thing was a good deal, if everything works
