  • painting a motor?

just tossing shit around in my head here. How hard is it to paint a black motor to look like the silver motors? It sounds like most people want to go the other direction, but i'm the oddball I guess. Trying to figure out what I want to do with this new bike. I also want spoke rims, and the silver motor.. i'm thinking about maybe just switching out the parts I want with my other 04 and then maybe seeing if I could trade this one for a clean 1600 with a silver motor. Hell. I don't know, too many options

You have cast wheels? I'd gladly trade my spokes for cast....let me know. Where are you located? I want to paint the motor on my white bike but want to see that someone has done it successfully and that it lasts for years before I spend that much time

if your set is in good shape and not all rusted and pitted i'd be interested. The set I have are very clean but the tires are not in the best of shape. I'm located In Ohio about 30 minutes east of Richmond.

Black paint dissipates heat better than any other color.

I wouldn't do it. To get a satisfactory result with a metallic color you would have to pull out the motor from the frame. Once out of the frame, it would make more sense to remove the paint than painting on top of an existing layer.
If I were in your shoes I would try to soda blast it. Remove the tank, pump, carb, lines and mask everything except what you want to remove and blast away. You might actually not only remove the paint, but also restore it to a state above factory finish. Soda is not very aggressive so if masked properly, chrome and other painted surfaces shouldn't be damaged.
If it's not paint but powder coating soda won't be abrasive enough though.

Painting over dark colors with a contrasting light color has never worked well for me on anything, scratches and dings always shine thru.. My patio furniture comes to mind.. .....good luck!

sounds like changing to a silver motor is more hassle than it's worth. I'll take that idea out of my head then. thanks for the replys

If you want a different color motor, different wheels, wouldn't it be easier/quicker to just find another bike that suits your taste better? That is a good looking R* you got I'd assume you could move it easily come spring.

black bikes is faster than other colors, and black absorbs heat more than any color, but i am not sure it affects heat transfer any different than any other color would( by adding another layer ) . are the colors on RS motors painted or ANODIZED black???here in FL, we call it black chrome , cause it wont rust or pit and requires more riding and less pole-ishing.

that is something that I have been considering as well. I would really also rather have a 1600 instead of the 1700, but this bike runs, rides, and appears so well taken care of i'm reluctant to get rid of it.

I loved my 1600, just seemed like the motor had more of a thump feel to it or something. I think someone said (bike mechanic from across the pond, had a bike with real flames painted on it) on the old RSC site that there was some type of difference in the crank that gave it the different feel. If I have that right.

Anybody know if the motor is painted or anodized? for that matter, is the plain motor anodized as well?

I want a black motor and mag wheels. You want to just trade bikes? You can keep your bags and fairing. My bike is 2 years newer. How many miles on yours? Mines at 58K

well that is kinda tempting, but your kinda far away. The bike I would even consider trading would be the one that I just bought, (has 50k) after I switched the Roadhouse duals with the freedom duals on my older bike. I'm not sure what I want do with it. Right now I'm figuring out which parts I want on my regular bike (which by the way it rarely has the fairing on it ) I haven't decided yet if I'm going to use the Black or the White paint set..... I wonder how much shipping would cost, Here is the bike when I bought it a few weeks ago. I did put the spot lights on my other bike. https://www.facebook.com/rusty.hylto...9482625412130/
