  • Passing lamp question

I bought my bike with the aftermarket passing lamps already on it. The lights are on constantly while using low beam, but turn off when switching to high beam. This makes no sense to me because I figure the more light the better. Am I missing something? Is there a good reason (besides whatever the law might say) for turning off the passing lights with high beam? Thanks!

Definitely the way they wired them. You can rewire them pretty easily to a constant on circuit. You might need to put in a switch while you're rewiring things. All my lights are wired independently and I can make a pretty good imitation of the sun when I want to . LOL

Since you're on the subject... Do you know Why they're called 'Passing Lamps' ?

I think "lamps" (as opposed to "lights") may be a Harley thing, but yes, I understand the "passing" part. I just don't care about using them for passing. I want the lights on all the time so maybe the cagers will look up from their cell phones and actually see me.

Ironman, if you really want cagers to see you install a modulator. the flashing definitely gets their attention

I use the "Kisan" Headlight Modulator. When I installed it there was an immediate noticeable difference in cars not turning in front of me. In fact on more than a few occasions I have had cagers roll down their window at a light to inform me that there is something wrong with my headlight because it was flashing. That also tells me that they see me. Modulators are also legal in all 50 states.

Hey Tom! I have the Baron's aftermarket wired exactly like the original Yami passing lights. They have a switch on them so I can turn them off if I don't want them on, but why the hell would I do that, right?
I would imagine the stock wiring diagram would indicate how to wore them for "always powered". If you don't have the schematic I have it and will send it to you if you need it. I also have the '04 Supplement which addresses wiring.
          Let me know.

No matter how you wire them, be aware that most states prohibit the use of spots or any auxiliary lighting while having the high beams on.
Check your state law before you change anything.
At least if you get a ticket you won't have the excuse "I didn't know".

In most states its illegal to have them on with the high beam, passing lamps are designed for being seen not for seeing the road. Auxillary lights or driving lights are for seeing up the road, passing lamps are usually only 30 watts each with driving lights. I've seen them so bright they looked like landing lights

My bike does not have a passing lamp. I do go by a lot of gas stations so the bike is good at passing gas.
