  • Aftermarket HSR42 carb from Ebay

I was looking around on ebay and found that the Chinese has started making knockoff HSR42 and HSR45 carbs. You can get one of them for $100 for a whole kit. I have used Chinese knock off carbs to replace Briggs&Stratton carbs and they work fine. I wonder if these do also? Has anyone tried one of these? It looks like it even comes with a Mikuni tuning manual so my guess is that Mikuni parts fit just fine. Good chance Mikuni buys castings from China and that is where they got all the specs.

I already have a HSR45 on mine so I don't need one. I was just wondering if anyone else has tried one. I'll bet they work just fine. They might even be made from castings that were rejected by Mikuni for a appearance casting flaws. As I said I rebuild riding mowers in the springtime for resale and I use China knockoff carbs all the time and never had an issue. Kinda like the small engines sold at HF, they are knockoffs of a Honda engine and most parts are replaceable with Honda parts. The Chinese being as honest as they are just steal the patent design that is sent to them from other countries for production in China.

Dave i am running a Chinese copy of Marvin Shebler carb on one of my 2 Ford 8N and it works as good as the other one with the factory MS Carb and thanks for the info about the Honda Knockoffs as i am about to purchase one for my 71 model Troybilt Rototiller heard a lot of good things about them but never knew anyone that has used one personally. so i am gonna try the old $99 special from HF and see what happens.

This is what I found on the HF Predator engine
          What is Honda clone engine?
Chonda is a generic term describing a small engine produced in China that is reverse engineered from a Honda small engine. It is also called a Honda Clone. ... The engines are usually identical to Honda small engines and the parts are nearly always interchangeable with genuine Honda Parts.

i had an evinrude 48 hp that had a metal shaving that moved back and forth in a passageway for 15 years, and the MFing thing wouldnt idle after a bout of WOT. finally, on probly the 3rd carb rebuild , it blew out into the old white Tshirt i use for carb rebuilds. what PIA trying to manoover a 24 ft pontoon in an Xwind with a motor stalls out at the ramp. my girls got good with ropes and push poles....... u learn to use the wind......

Yes they also make knock offs for the off road world, and there have been many reports of problems with poor castings, and just overall poor quality control. They may look the same but after hearing of all of the problems on off road forums I follow I would not take the chance. YMMV.

On the XS 650 forum, Mikes XS sold and still sells an aftermarket carb set which is total junk. Those who have bought them had nothing but problems tuning them and poor bore creating hung up slides. Lots have given up and had took them off and have gone either stock OEM CV or Mikuni VM. I would not purchase chinese knock offs and would rather save and buy something that has been proven.

This is the type of info I was hoping to get. Somewhat 1st hand info. It seems that it may be just the luck of the draw depending on what Chinese company made the one a person purchases.

Dave I can see using a chinese carb on a lawn mower or snowblower type engine with fixed throttle position. In the xs 650 aftermarket carb had its own style of jets and not using Mikuni. Alot was done by trial, error and plenty of cursing. In the forum classifieds, the guys could barely give them away! Lol

That would suck to try jetting and tuning a carb with it's own style jet. Especially with a jet style that wasn't available at the corner bike shop. Sounds like a disaster.
These HSR knockoffs appear to use Mikuni jets, I say that because it comes with the Mikuni tuning manual but I could be wrong..

This one comes with a “Highly Recommended” thumbs up ribbon. It must be good!
