Does anyone have a copy of the Tech Article that described How to vent a Road Star gas cap that used to be on the "Old Forum" web site ? That would be much appreciated.

  • #2
They are trying to post up the old tech articles as they get time. I looked after your earlier comment, and didn't see it. Maybe they can find the time.
For now, ride it and if it shuts down, open the gas cap as soon as you stop and see if you here a gush of air trying to get into the tank. If so, and the bike fires right up after relieving a possible vacuum, then we can get you lined out on venting the cap. The pics on the old tech article were great, but Photobucket may have eaten them.

drill out the breather pipe on the tank that way any petrol fumes go out under the bike and wont burst into flames when you are cruising and light up a smoke

          Hi Lifeguard,
If you would be so kind, I'd like that article on gas cap venting also. Not sure how to PM you.

You might not be happy after venting the fuel cap. It will leak fuel when the tank is full, and smell up your garage.
I have tried the vented cap and hated it, so I replaced the cap back to stock. The best way to vent the Road Star tank is to remove the rollover valve and drill the vent tube, "as Aussie John said", making sure the hose is in good shape.
Just my thoughts, hope it helps.

I'm about ready to go pumpless, too, and since gas smell in the garage is one of the things I'm trying to get rid of, drilling the vent tube sounds better. Was there an article on that?

Both of my caps are vented. I don’t notice any gas smell. I may be use to it. I’ve got two bikes a car, two chainsaws and a Sthil Kombi in there as well.
If you park a hot bike in the garage, and look underneath of it at the vent line, you’ll notice fumes wafting out of the end of the line until the temp stabilizes. It is what it does. Try letting it cool down outside if it’s not a problem.

Drilling the tube involves straightening the little elbow on the front upper upper right corner of the tank, and drilling out the insides. When you finish, you bend it back like it was.
                      I like venting the cap

I haven't seen any articles on the vent line. Not sure if there is one out there?
After putting the 3mm float valve from a Yamaha 660 Grizzly in the carb and going pumpless, is when I re-did the tank vent. I didn't straighten the vent tube on the tank, I just drilled the small orfice on the end of the vent tube. Removing the rollover valve helped out the most. I believe it was sticking or plugged up.
SKWEARpeg, does fuel leak out when your tank is full?

I ran my '00 pumpless. Didn't vent the cap, didn't drill the vent tube. Didn't have any problems.
I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !

Only if I overfill it. If I stop at the bottom of the neck, I don’t have any issues. I can count the times it has been an issue, on one hand. Those particular times involved very cold gas, and a hot tank. The expansion from the fuel, caused a small amount to push out the top. Not enough to make me regret venting it. If you’re on a ride, don’t fill the tank to the brim and then park the bike in the sun. Fill up after lunch.
From what I know of drilling the little elbow, it’s not just the end, but there is a small check ball/valve past the bend. This is what has become stuck and caused a problem for a few. If you don’t straighten it out, you don’t get to the problem. Those who’ve done it recommend grease on the bit and going slow to try and capture the shavings. There are fine screens on the petcock tubes, that will help with anything that gets past.
Removing the rollover, is a good plan. Even the newer rollover design has issues occasionally.

Ricohawk who was a member on the old Forum, got along for a year before he got stuck on the side of a mountain in Thailand. Wet day, and the motor quit as he got close to the top. Because of where he was, he needed help after the bike slipped off the shoulder while he was stopped. He vented the cap, and no more issues.
I helped with advice for another member who went pumpless and didn’t vent the cap. He noticed his tank distorting on a road trip.

On the the other hand, we’ve had members do nothing but ditch the pump, and nothing else. Even continue using the stock 2.0 needle and seat designed for pump use, and never look back.

In a nutshell, as long as there are no issues with the factory venting system, everything works good.

We had a thread on the old Forum about going Pumpless, that Mr. Shamrock did regarding not cutting corners and doing it right. It was a great thread with lots of good info. I’m just a big fan of doing everything I can to prevent a problem later. When there is anecdotal evidence of problems, “wait and see” just seems unfinished. JMHO
