  • Crappy ported intake manifold?

Why does this ported intake manifold look so crappy? It looks like they used a hand file to do it. I’m debating returning it and buying a tool and doing my stock one myself. Has any one else noticed the poor quality or is this a fake??? Or so I not know what I’m talking about and this will really give me 6-8 hp?!

I would return and do it yourself. That has barely been touched. All the rubber in the side runners should be removed down to the aluminum and the corners need to be rounded out more than that one. all that green shit on the flange needs to come off also. look in the tech articles and you should be able to find some good info and pics of a properly ported manifold.

Don't feel bad alot of members have bought that same one and just kept it and finished the porting on it properly. At least you can send it back before messing with it.

They said they would take it back no problem, so what’s next.. what’s the best air filter intake kit I can buy?

And, before you buy off eBay... check with AJUSA first. That's where I've bought all mine at best price in the past.

A few of us run the K&N RC1624. $50 - 60 bucks, requires no additional mounts, clamps on old school dirt bike style with the (provided) hose clamp.Looks cool, breathes really good, no leg interference and easy access to carb adjustments. I have run mine 5 years and I wouldn't replace it with anything else. The miniature version of it just below it is for the crank case vent.

So no hardware, just hose clamp. I like that look so much better. And the crankcase is the one off the top of rear cylinder that goes to air box. The other hose goes to the oil tank

So I bought a straight grinder and some grinding stones. I got a little carried away porting. I was under the assumption the whole thing was an aluminum core and the two ends came off when I went too deep into the rubber. I’m continuing the port job and really opening the whole thing up and will try to smooth the whole surface. But what can I use to glue the aluminum plugs back into the rubber center section??

Eeeuuuwww... I'm gonna say U trashed that one, Mikegoat.
Someone else may have a suggestion. They'll likely chime in.

My suggestion is to get another stock manifold & start over.

Don't forget to surface the flanges on a *Dead Flat Surface*, like glass or marble.

When porting an intake manifold.....More is not better and super smooth is not better. Too smooth yields poor results in heads and manifolds. It's an art for sure...I think the best an average person can hope for is to port match, smooth out the edges/lips (flatten),add a nice overall radius/contour...but NOT take too much meat off or go for slippery smooth. Your probably talking adding 3-4hp/torque (at the tire) at best on a stock engine.

I also got one of those crappy ported intake manifolds. I remember thinking it didnt look much different than the stock one I removed. At least you were smart enough to question it and not just install it anyway.

Well, I’m going to continue porting this one. See if I can glue it back together and give it a test run. If it runs like crap I’ll smooth out the baron one and throw it in there. Nothing gained without trying.
