  • Original new Roadstar parts...

I have an opportunity to purchase old stock, mostly new, windshields, brackets, saddle bags, bars, cables, seats, tons of billet parts, etc. Approximately $7500 value. Do you think it is worth it?? What would you pay???

  • #2
New old stock R/S parts are getting harder to find every day.
While the market has definitely slowed down, I believe it will never completely evaporate.
If you have the capitol to lay out, the time to catalog it, a place to store it, I believe it would be a good investment. It would made a killer E-Bay store.
I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !

+1 on that! And Christmas is coming!!

$7,500 value as in MSRP? If so, retail prices were always high... many wouldn't pay them. Yes, it's NOS, but you can barely get half on new... and, you tie up capital for a long time... and, there will be stuff that'll never sell. Unless the opportunity for MSRP of $7,500 worth of NOS stuff can be had for under $2k... UNDER $2k... I wouldn't touch it. It would begin to work at $1,500, less would be better.

Do the math! Seats are not worth much. Most folks want hard bags versus soft leather bags. Windshields and brackets are sought-after. Get a good estimated resale price on each item and then do the math. Sounds high to me.

Low ball, what do you have to lose. A grand is a good place to start. There is a reason they are offering a mass dump of parts.
Parts are pretty low supply but they are also somewhat low demand.
I would be interested in a couple things though if it goes through for you

I am hoping for $2000... it's hard to reason with people who think that the parts are still worth the same money... We are of course all cheapskates here....

People always overvalue what they have and unconsciously add a personal premium (Oh, my dad had it when I was in college. It's been in the family for years. It was my first bike). While the backstory is nice to hear, it adds NO value. Parts are parts and have an absolute value (what they will reasonably sell for). If you can figure out what the total value of the parts are once sold (plus cost of time and tying up of capital), then offer a third of that and maybe go as far as 50%. You will then double your money. Look at the inventory carefully and be sure to take into consideration incomplete/damaged items, things that just don't sell and all the handling and time to sell the stuff. I still have several shelves of auto parts that I bought at auctions and rarely use now. They have moved from garage to garage, like a old dog. Gotta clear them out in the next move. Don't get caught in the trap.

$2k is likely waaaaaay too much. Get an inventory of parts. Tell them you have ZERO use for any stock seats, handlebars, risers, or soft bags/brackets. Only be interested in windshields and mounts....bilett Star accessories....hard bags....passenger floorboards/brackets. If a little bilett piece says $129.99 MSRP you can sell for $65 plus sh. So want to buy it for $30.

you spend $2k and end up with a bunch of seats andl leather bags you will loose your ass

I wonder if this is the same skid of parts that was making the rounds on the FB forums last year, they weren't all R* parts but an assortment of V Star parts also.

You think R* owners are cheap, try selling parts to 650 and 1100 owners.

            • #10
I've often thought of doing something similar....find a bunch of NOS R* parts/accessories for a good price (no more than 25% of retail price), and sell the stuff to members here for 50% of MSRP.
Cataloging, storage, and shipping could become a pain in the ass issue unless you have a garage large enough to do all that.
I'm sure there would be some interest here and on the FB page for some of the stuff, but, as noted above, nobody wants a stock seat, stock risers, stock bars, etc.....I share your feelings about the leather bags, but most don't.
OEM cables, belts, pulleys, seals, back rests, passenger floor boards, and many "bling" type accessories would probably sell here or on FB.
I wish you luck in your endeavor. If and when you do it please let us know here.....I'm sure I'll be in the market for some stuff.

Hard or soft bags? There’s a value difference. I’d walk away! Not much of value there.

So it seems the bags are from a royal star, all NIB. I'm pretty sure they fit our bikes but with some mods.. any idea? Also, I think I may buy just what I want and pass along his info to anyone that may be interested.

Get definite on bags and pictures. Jardine for ward controls or just floorboards. I'd get pics of anything before agreeing to anything. Part numbers too...could be buying a whole bunch of shit for a vstar 950/1100 that looks like roadstar parts. For what he is listing $2k is way optomistic
