  • Engine swap

I have a 2005 road star engine and a chance to get a 2000 road star with a blown engine real cheap the bike is nice,my question is does anybody know for sure if the 05 engine will swap to the 2000 bike as a bolt in with no mod's.

    Thanks

The 05 will bolt into the 2000 as the frames are the same. The motor bracket between the two heads is different, so you need to use the 2005 bracket. You will need to use the 2005 intake manifold too because they are different between the 1600 and the 1700. Everything else is the same.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have a question in the same vein:

Sounds to me from what I have read that the answer is "yes", but I wanted to verify just in case. I have a 1600 with a blown motor. I found a 1700 motor-only deal. Will the 1700 motor mate up with the 1600 transmission?
Just a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude.

the Yamaha part number for a 1600 and 1700 frames are the same so the answer is buy the engine if it is a good deal and install it. The transmission is part of the engine inside the engine case. everything else should bolt up without issue.

Just curious what is blown on your 1700??? What happened to it? A bad/blown engine on a 1700 is almost as rare as finding a Unicorn or seeing a Bigfoot.

Mine was a 1600 that seized. I had wanted a RoadStar for about 7 years before I could afford to get one. I should have known it was a bad deal, it was shady from the start. The guy selling it wasn't the owner, the title was already signed, it was in pretty rough shape and was smoking pretty good. Like an idiot, I bought emotionally because I wanted the bike so bad. Got it home and took it for a ride. Although I checked the oil before taking it for a ride, I broke my own rule of changing all the fluids before taking it out. I was too excited. Took it for a ride and it shut down. It wouldn't crank fast enough to start and I couldn't figure out why. Spent a few months trying to figure it out. I didn't think it was seized because it would still crank, just very very slow. I brought it here for input. Tried everything under the sun including new battery, starter wires, starter, relays, oil pump gear, etc - nothing worked. Took it down to the pistons, adjusted valves, rebuild the carb, all hoping it was something stupid. Once I treated it like a seized motor and put MMO on the pistons and let it sit, I was finally able to get it to turn over normally. It fired up and ran for about three seconds before the motor hard seized and shot sparks out the tail pipe. Now it is seized and I'm done wasting my time. I have since bought another 05 RoadStar and love it! I built it into a bagger for a couple roadtrips and it's an awesome bike. Since this one is just sitting around, I thought I'd put the same motor I have in the other one in it and build a chop out of it.

It's as rare as seeing a unicorn peeing on big foot while engaged in mutually consentual sex!

My guess is that the oil pump drive gear broke and it was run without oil pressure for awhile. When a motor seizes the rods seize to the crankshaft not pistons to cylinder walls so I'm not sure what significance the MMO had to making it crank easier.

Hmm, I was not aware of that. I looked up info on freeing up a seized engine, letting MMO (or other penetrating lubricants) sit on the pistons for a few days was the most common response so I gave it a try and it worked. I had always assumed it was the piston rings sticking to the cylinder walls that caused an engine to seize.

Pull the engine apart, and see what’s going on. We would like to know the cause for it seizing.

I'm curious myself. I plan to do that, but I have a huge to do list and not a lot of free time, so it will probably be a while before I get to it. Once I know, you'll know.
