  • I'm losing my mind over this roadwing...

Thinking I was oversprung, I put the stock spring on my roadwing to soften things up. Didn't change things one bit. Still super harsh, like a bucking bronco over every bump.
I've bled the RAP and get resistance after about 1/4 turn. I've gone all the way up and down the preload settings, nada. I'm about to lose my mind!

I've was thinking that perhaps I'm completely backwards and rather than oversprung, I'm undersprung and have been riding bottomed out the whole time?
I took the following video to show what I've got going on. This is with the stock spring. First few bounces are at max preload. Then backed off to standard on the RAP.

Sorry for the sound, the cicadas are crazy right now.

What fluid are you using in the Rap?

        5wt fork oil. Bel Ray.

JMO but that is bouncing on a air bubble in the collar not oil.

Here is a pretty good video on how to bleed the Roadwing.

That's the video I use for a guide. If that's not working, is there a trick to get air out of the collar?

The collar is a “zero clearance” cylinder. There is no more than 1CC worth of space beyond the banjo when the collar is fully compressed.

                  JD,
what do you think he has going on with it? That thing is bouncing like a pogo stick. It has to be air imo. Your thought? You and Smokescreens are the 2 members I would go to if I had an issue with a roadwing.

the piston in your rap might not be pushed all the way back. back the rap off all the way and use something to physically push the piston back like you would when doing a brake job. then fill and attach.

I made sure to do that when I bled it. Each time I put fluid in the RAP.

so do you feel resistance within the first full turn on the knob? if so you have the air out. you are getting a ton of travel on that shock with the spring installed. is that the road star spring?

I do. At about a 1/4 turn. The spring in the video is the one from the stock Road Star shock. I swapped it because I thought I was over sprung, with the behavior being the same as with the spring that came with the roadwing, I think I may have been under sprung?

I'm thinking put the other spring back on and take a new video?

I think you have a dampening issue not a spring issue.

A dampening issue? As in the shock is no good?

Not knowing how much dampening comes from the adjuster and how much is from the shock itself I can't answer that. I just don't think it is a spring issue. especially if it is the same issue with 2 different springs you had on it.

A bad spring will make it bottom out with load. Bad dampening will make it pogo/bounce.

that shock is as close to brand new as it gets. i highly boubt its a bad shock. may i ask how much you weigh? that would give us all a pretty good idea on what spring would be better. and just for the giggles of it, if you do swap the spring again you can feel hoe hard the shock is to close without the spring on it. should take a fair bit of pressure to do so and then open back up in a slow steady pace. also a bad shock should have oil leakage all around the shaft.

Sure thing. I'm 250, probably 265 with helmet, jacket, etc. Add the Mrs. and a full load of gear, round up to 500. So not light. Which leads me back to under sprung. I was a little surprised in my other post, that over sprung was the thought due to my weight.

I do think I'm going to put the roadwing spring back on it, and take another video this weekend. If for nothing else to see how it's behaving, and share it.

I went out to take another look, and no leaking fluids.

To me the spring is part to blame and it is the spring that keeps your ass off the ground, the shock stops the spring from compressing to fast when you jump on the bike or hit a bump and then slows the rate at which the spring can return to the normal position when sitting on the bike, if the rear suspension tends to go up and down after hitting a bump then the shock absorber part is not working. The rap when is screwed in applies oil pressure to the collar on the shock and moves the bottom of the spring towards the top of the shock, applying more spring pressure means when you sit on the bike the back end can't go down as far with the same weight, the rap does not control anything else as in it cannot control the damping effects of the shock

at 250 i would most definitely put the roadwing spring back on. the roadie spring is good for someone well under 200lbs. so not for me either, lol. be sure to check the force needed to compress the shock itself with no spring. it should not be easy and take a good ammount of effort pressing it againt a work bench or something.

Similar weight myself. I run 30 percent of available preload running solo with the wing spring. The damper should take over 80 pounds of pressure to move by hand. You’re getting a lot of sag there, indicating not enough spring.

At 1 time I was 300# and the roadwing with a Yamaha progressive spring was too much and a stock goldwing spring was and has been perfect after I swapped it out. Now at 190 it is really smooth with the wing spring. I can understand 1 spring being weak but 2 different springs? both are springs used by almost everyone with a roadwing and no issues. I guess when he says "like a bucking bronco over every bump." I read that as meaning the pogo effect you get with bad dampening not bottoming out. If it is the spring I think there are only a couple options. either a progressive Goldwing spring or progressive Roadstar spring like I had or a 1000# straight weight spring
