  • She's burnin up

Well not really and yes I know its summer and yes I know the girlfriend is hot (she'll like knowing I put that there), but the bike over the last few weeks seems to be running a lot hotter than it used too. It was time for an oil change so I did that recently but still feeling a lot lot more head underneath than I used too. Including while riding.

    Thoughts?

Buy a little infrared thermometer at HF for about $10 and check the engine temp.

          to hot to touch

I would say anything around 230º - 280º checking on the side of the jugs. I have a oil temp gauge and it would get up around 260º sometimes on a spirited xway ride in the Mich summer heat. When I have checked on the side of the engine with the infrared thermometer after a normal ride it was always in the 230º range.

Do you have a shop nearby that can test AFR? Running lean gets hot, Rich is cooler. Ideal AFR is 13.4.

                13.4? That's at *Idle* right?

I would assume it’s like any other engine and it depends on what the load of the engine is. Idle, cruise, hard acceleration would all be different.

What I meant was that 13.4 is generally the upper afr limit. From what I’ve read 13.5 and up is getting too lean.
Of course afr is always fluctuating. But it’s generally running in the high 13’s or higher then that lean condition could be a reason for the high temps. It could be a carb issue or perhaps a sticking intake valve. I’m not saying it’s the issue. Just a potential thing that I would diagnose.

Those long shot exhaust with heat shields do get really hot and too hot to touch!
I know because I bought a used set and took them off and got a set of short shots with full length heat shields.(Vance & Hines)
I am thinking you could cut those long shots off and use the cut off sections to make heat shields by cutting them length wise with a cut off wheel. It would be some work.

What fuel are you running? 87 is best. Mine ran hot when I used premium.

                  Depends on the engine load.

some of those values are lean for a air cooled engine and ok for a liquid cooled engine. 15 at cruise is the very highest I would want to go. In fact at hwy cruise speeds I always prefer and set mine at no higher than about 14-14.5. I have a AFR gauge on the bike so I get to see it as a real time readout.

The way they run engines with thermostats in the 200+° range isn’t very far off from the air cooled variety. The hotter, the leaner.

the factory exhaust has better heat shielding than Vance and hines 4 sure. thats why i stick with OEM and stage 1. FLORIDA IS HOT MAN. i had some on another bike, and was not impressed with quality.

You miss the point of aftermarket pipes, it's not to make more heat lol.

ok what am i missing, they burn your leg, in spite of proper jetting, they rust prematurely , they do not have a crossover, so they dont really improve performance. and IMHO, the OEMs are not any UGLEEer than V&H. plus tehy are a bit loud , and are often resold by unhappy owners on CL. the 2 into 1 propipe being the exception, all tho i dont prefer the "look"

Ok, took a good three hour ride Saturday. Borrowed the shops Fluke IR thermometer. Between the fins I was getting around 265. I shot it on the top fin on left side where the cutout is for the spark plug and got 280. The engine on the legs felt hotter than it used to last couple years.

take temp in the middle side of the jug should be in the 230º-260º or so range. There will be spots on the engine that are hotter than others and my guess that by the spark plug and combustion chamber is one of those spots. Hell pull a plug to see if it is running lean, my guess is that it is not lean. and that there is nothing wrong.
