  • Pumpless question

    I didn't notice in any discussions about going pumpless (I might have missed it), but, when you switch to going pumpless, do you have to turn off the petcock when you turn the bike off, or should the float valve suffice for preventing fuel overflow?

    I never turn mine off and haven't had a problem

      No Sir. No need to turn off the petcock anymore once you go pumpless, *Unless* you just want the extra security.

      It is recommended that you upgrade to a larger float needle/seat set for better gas flow.

      With that new needle/seat your float should totally shut off the fuel flow into the bowl.

        If you own your house shut the gas off on the motorcycle when not riding it.

        You do like your house right. What I am saying is sometimes a float can get stuck.

          I never leave a gravity flow system open. I shut mine off every time it’s going to sit for long.

            and I leave mine on all winter so the carb dosen't dry out..not saying it is right but it is what I do.........

          You probably should but, I have been sans pump 5+ years and have never shut off the petcock. My pathetic excuse for not doing so is it's too hard for a fat man to reach it.

            I am pumpless on all 3 of mine, and I shut the fuel off after every ride. Since mine is an attached garage, like another has said... I like my home. Gas off!

              I still run the pump, but if i was pump-less I'd turn the fuel off every time I turned the engine off. I used to own a Kawasaki vulcan 800 and they were notorious for float valve sticking open. What made matters worse is it used a vaccum shut off petcock that was a piss pour design (Kawasaki redesigned them at some point) and when the float valve stuck open it would empty the entire tank down into that engine. it made a royal mess. I find the pump to be very good protection against that happening. If the float valve sticks open or get a piece of junk in it all that gets dumped into the engine is whats in the bowl and fuel line.

                I always turn off my petcock but I always have, don't plan on changing, I hate coming back to an empty tank. Better safe than sorry. It's an easy move.

                  New Subject on Pumpless : Last two times out after stopping for a while , I restart with no problem but , after taking off I get a major Sputtering and it dies like it just ran out of gas . After sitting a few it restarts and goes on down the road. Also had this Sputter - Die act happen once when opening up the throttle . What could be the problem ? I simply removed my pump and ran a 5/16 fuel line with a filter. Has worked great for 3-4 tanks and now this .

                    Hmmm, look for a trap in the fuel line between the jugs where it traps air, the heat in there could cause a vapor lock type issue, make sure fuel line is not against one of the jugs. My guess only. More knowledgeable people will chime in.

                      I wonder if you could be starving for fuel if you didn't install the Grizzly float needle valve and seat?

                          After listening and understanding , I do believe vapor lock is my poison . REROUTE !!! We'll see.

                            Or you could always put the pump back on and see if that takes care of the problem. There was a reason Yamaha used a pump to begin with.

                          in florida sun, black color, hot , not pumpless, i noticed without shutting off cock, oil always had a gasoline smell. so it was getting in there when u least expect it, plus i have a gas water heater in my garage.

                            If you’re going to stick with the pump, always turn off the petcock before turning off your motor so that there will not be pressure between the pump and the carb when you shut it off. The pump will cause carb ‘puke’.

                          I used to have that very problem... the solution for me was simply this... I would leave gas ON during the entire time of my ride, and would only shut it OFF when I parked it back at home. Just stopping during the ride... leave the gas on.

                              Sounds like vapor lock . I just pull the gas cap off and let it breathe for a min . Runs fine if I do that .

                                Hi , if you Ride hard , you may want to upgrade to the Yamaha 3.0 Needle and seat , it’s a direct replacement . I think the 3.0 was originally for a Yamaha Wolverine ?
