Do it right and you will not have any issues - no fuel starvation, no carb puke and most of all, no regrets! The pump is an expensive, short lived piece of crap, that adds weight, clutters up the side of the motor and causes carb “puke” (fuel spewing out of the carb for those that may not know about it).

I seriously doubt that you have ‘vapor lock’ with gravity feed! As long as you have the line installed in an incline the bubbles would go back up into the tank and be replaced with fuel.

You need to change out the inlet valve - (grizzly or equivalent), remove the fuel inlet screen (you won’t need it if you have an in-line fuel filter), i recommend venting the gas cap and cutting down the main petcock tube so that when you need to switch to auxiliary, it will more accurately matche the ‘low fuel’ light on the gauge.

Look up going pumpless in the tech section. Gravity has never failed me yet.

    Ratl.

What is the best route for fuel line when going Pumpless ? Any pictures showing routing ?

I run the fuel line over the center of the top of the intake manifold. I also use the fuel hose spring over the fuel hose to help with cooling.
You can route the fuel hose under the manifold, either way will work.

theres not many of us left at RSC , just an FYI, we dont all agree on pumpless representing an improvement, just a mod. stock fuel pumps are reliable, they are only expensive if u have to buy a new one, i dont know anyone that had a failure, of the 8 people with roadies and 15-20 years that i know, and im not sure they cause carb puke either. and u can hide it under right side cover looks good too. venting your gas tank in a garage can be a fire hazard , like i have a gas water heater in there. bikes leak fumes to begin with, why add to that, certainly wont make it any faster??? seems they are around 30-40 bucks, ive had one in my parts heap for about 6 years...........

You don’t have to vent the tank cap when going pumpless, just make sure the tank is venting correctly.
My thoughts on going pumpless are, it’s one less thing to go wrong, no electric usage, cleans up the left side, and takes off weight.
If the fuel is above the carburetor, then it doesn’t need to be pressurized.

yeah yeah yeah. we have been having this discussion for ny on to 15 years . some need venting of tank. i imagine altitude matters. and fuel filter condition. yamaha makes good shit, fuel pumps included. they dominate outboard industry. i usually kill the cock, and often forget to reopen. it dies in about a 1/4 mile, the pump fills that mfin float bowl instantly and gets you out of the way of that semi heading straight for you. it says i have a spectacular aura about me, NO, that was a phart!

I prefer the Tygon fuel line. It’s a little pricey, but it flexible and premium line. You can find the line on eBay and usually runs around $7.00+ a foot.

I don't know if its luck of the draw, driving habits/locations, or even if there is specific SN range, but after my SECOND fuel pump went out, I went pumpless.

What symptoms made you guys switch to the Grizzley float needle?

stock needle is too small for gravity feed. the bowl can't fill fast enough under hard acceleration and the engine starves..........

trex star, are you saying you had 2 road star fuel pump failures? same bike, how many miles? both OEM pumps??? thats crazy! i drive mine daily all year long , decades, barely drive on 4 wheels. i know they had bad batches of brush plates in the starters. lets get some to chime in if they had failures with pump. did you have any electrical issues with that bike? i do carry the spare pump in the toy hauler to events

Yes, both OEM, first one at 5K miles on a garages bike; figured it was a fluke. I never wanted to go pumpless, but after the 2nd one died I went for it. No electrical issues - only "mod" with an electrical connection at the time was a dyna 3000, so I dont believe it was self induced.

Did the OP's pump die or is this problem caused because he was trying to prevent a problem that hadn't happened yet? I run the pump and the bike runs fine 35k on the clock never a problem. Sorry but i'm not following the crowd of pumpless owners because the pump could fail. I'm more worried about getting stranded because of a flat tire. If it isn't broke i don't fix it

My pump died on the road at about 18,000 miles in the middle of a ride. It took me quite a while to figure out that my pump had failed on the side of the road, because I too had the misconception that the pump was a necessary and reliable part. That, and the fact that the failure was intermittent!

I had my wife bring me a length of line and bypassed it on the side of the road to get me home. I did some research here at the RSC and found a bunch of others had experienced the same issue. They came up with the solution I have been using for about 9 years now.

You can talk about how it as designed to have it all you want, but that doesn’t make it needed, just a poorly researched engineering decision. As evidence, I have never again had carb puke as I did on a regular basis before going pumpless. There wouldn’t be so many ‘solutions’ to carb puke if the pump wasn’t there.

It took me a little research and a few adjustments, but once it was right, there’s been no further issues. My costs were one time and way lower.

BTW, if you don’t want to vent the cap, you just need to remove the rollover valve in the tank vent tube as an alternative.

                      Just my experience.

                      Ratl.

Pumpless was the only cure for puking on my bike. Back then we were all using Suzuki jets. Then some one discovered Grizzly jets were bigger and better. I vented my cap, in line filter...… Ran great for years. Yeh, if I wanted to I could run the bowl dry but it would recover in about 2 seconds.
