  • Busted Shock Mount

So, busted my shock mount. Does putting it back and re-welding it usually do it or is there a good way to reinforce it?

You can reinforce it, just make sure your not restricting the movement or travel.

Sorry to hear about the broken shock mount. It appears that this is a common thing. Good luck with the repairs. It would be nice if you can post pictures of what you did to fix the problem.

I will try and keep a log on the repairs.

So, what I have so far. I forgot to take a before picture. The forward mount was pulled back and down. If you can see in the picture they are not welded on the vertical or look under your bike. I am going to weld that vertical.
I removed the back of the bike. The easy stuff, rear fender assembly, rear wheel, inner fender/mud guard and the shock of course.
Then I cut a piece of 3/8" water pipe to 4 7/8" (the width of the shock assembly there) and put it in place of the shock with a 7/16" x 6" bolt and tightened it down. (don't use the shock bolt) That is to keep things aligned while hammering on it.
Then with my 1 1/2" axle shaft and big hammer (splitting maul) I hammered the ears back into place with 2 hits on one side then a couple hits on the other side until it was back in place. That's it for tonight.

Mike, dit it bend back easily? Hope you strapped the bike to the jack before hitting. You really should remove the fuel tank and drain the carb and fuel line before welding. Also wrap a wet towel around the engine case.

You are such a killjoy Shores. There are few things that will get your heart racing like seeing your bike on fire.

I would also make sure the battery is disconnected.

Yes, I am going to remove the battery and was going to place a heat shield between where I weld and the back of the engine case. Was also going to put a ground strap from bike to the ground besides the welder ground. Hoping not to fry electronics. It's not like a 69 chevy.

Might not hurt to go the extra step and unplug the ign module and speedo head. As you said it's not a 69 Chevy. the extra steps may save a lot of aggravation later.

O.K. Got her welded last night and put back together this morning. I forgot to take pictures of after. Actually,---- I was embarrassed about the welding but I'm pretty sure it's strong enough. Doesn't look that bad after painting. Took it for a one up test ride today and seams good but some 2 up riding will tell the tale. I welded the vertical and about 1 1/2" along the back horizontal. I think if your planning to ride 2 up welding that vertical before it breaks would keep it from breaking.
I was also wondering if it is the compression or the rebound that breaks that mount, it seemed to be bent in the wrong direction for compression.

You have to wonder why it wasn't welded that way from the factory. Maybe the Jap Robot who welded it had a little too much Saki the night before.

Yeah, I wondered why they just didn't weld that little vertical from the start.
