I've installed them successfully before but when trying to remove the fastener the helicoil came out with it. Not a fan of them but when that was the only game in town... Now we have options!

I have tried helicoils many times and never got one to hold.

Gotta love safety wires! They serve a great purpose and look cool as well. Nice touch.

Indeed it is fast. Mine is a 2006 so no nanny electronics at all either. Just whatever self control you have (or don’t have, ha ha).

It’s still my favorite year for the R1. New ones are cool but lots of electronics and lots of money.

Love the R1. But is too fast for me.

Gotcha, sounds like a way better set up than the helicoil set up to me. Thanks for posting the tip!

Don’t need thread locker on the insert because the insert driver basically cold forms the bottom portion of the threads and locks it in place (in my case to the aluminum threads in my fork tube).

Hmm, torque wrench, what’s that? You don’t think some hamfisted person would strip out aluminum threads without a torque wrench do you?

Never heard of the “timesert” but seems like a much better idea than the helicoil, never was a fan of those but they were the only game in town so... The video I watched for timesert didn’t show using thread locker on the insert, is that recommend in the instructions?

Only have a couple older ones. I’ll get more on the Smokies trip. My personal favorite is the track pic. Turn 4 at Grattan Raceway outside of Grand Rapids, MI

    F6B:
Needed new tires, new brakes, new brake fluid, and some other little maintenance checks. Put the brand new Dunlop Elite 4 tires on (taller tire for the rear-more on this later). EBC HH front brake pads because this bike doesn’t stop worth crap and I liked those pads on my Roadstar. Made a huge difference there so I wanted them on this heavy beast. Flushed 4 bottles of Honda DOT4 fluid thru this linked brake system (over engineered piece of crap, lol). There are 7 bleeder points! What the crap, ha ha. Got it all done in a little under 2 hours.

Now it’s time for the little mandatory test drive. And wanted to bed in the brake pads. So some heavy up and down braking is in order. Keep in mind, brand new tires. So, I stupidly start heavy front braking about 300 feet from my driveway. On a brand new front tire. It locks up. And I’m not wearing any protective gear like an idiot. Handlebars start to turn very quickly and for a nanosecond I thought I’m going down hard. Had the good enough sense to let go of the brake lever and she recovered thankfully. That was some serious pucker factor. Can clearly see the skid mark on the road.

On to the Elite 4 tires. Much better than the Elite 3’s. Front tread pattern on the 3’s caused the handlebars to move when going slow speeds. Hated that. They gripped pretty well and can handle the weight and power of the F6B so I went with the Elite 4’s. Front tire tread pattern is much better with no movement. Went with a taller rear tire and so far it’s awesome. Bike turns a little quicker (this was expected). More ground clearance (will test this out extensively in the mountains soon-can’t wait!). At higher speeds it wasn’t quite as stable as it used to be but it’s still one of the most stable big bikes at speed that you’ll ever experience so that’s all good.

All in all a good weekend for bike maintenance. Now if I could only find time to ride more...

A tale of 2 bikes...for a Tail of the Dragon

So, last week doing some maintenance on my bikes. Hoping to bring the F6B and the R1 down to Deals Gap area for our annual September meet and ride.

    R1:
New street legal tires need to be put on. Already have good brakes, new oil and filter, flushed new fluid thru the brake system, suspension is dialed in near perfect. Pull off the left front brake caliper and the threads inside the fork leg pretty much all come out with the bolt. Damn. That gets removed and replaced quite often and I’m sure I gorilla tightened it one too many times (torque wrench is fairly important when screwing into aluminum. Who knew?) So after wallowing in despair for awhile I start to look into thread repair. Helicoil almost got the job but then I decided Timesert was a better repair (not cheap but get what you pay for...) Got it done yesterday and after carefully following the instructions to the letter, I feel very good about it. Hell, it’s probably better than the original threads actually. Used an actual torque wrench on all 4 new bolts from ProBolt (predrilled for safety wire this time also). And then safety wired both sides for good measure. Put the lights and mirrors and plate holder thing back on so she’s about ready for legal street use for the first time in 6 years or so. It looks funny with lights and mirrors also, lol. Still possibly the sexiest machine ever devised by the human brain, IMO.
