  • Still here thanks to the Indian brakes.

I was my first long trip on with my new-to-me Chieftain (from Friday to Tuesday night).
I'm heading down the interstate just enjoying the perfect weather. Things are going great, I'm making good time.
Traffic is running about 75-80 in the left lane, got a good distance to the car in front of me, I'm kicked back with me feet out on the highway pegs, just chilling.
I'm not sure if I looked away for a moment or zoned out, but suddenly I notice the car in front of me is breaking hard and almost stopped. The car in the right lane is right beside him.
I grab a handful of front brake, and pull my foot back hit the rear brake. As I hit the rear break I remember thinking that this doesn't feel right, but I had no time to look, and was afraid to lift my foot and try again, and maybe cause me to loose control.
I'm closing in on the car fast, but also stopping very quickly. I was thinking it's going to be close, but I don't think i'll get stopped in time. I'm looking for my way out as this is going on. My thinking is that if I head for the gap between the 2 cars maybe it'll give me a little more room to stop, or at least make the impact a little easier. Plus the car behind me was stopping fast as well, and I didn't want to get smashed, even if I did manage to stop in time. I start aiming between the cars but ended up stopping with about a foot to go. The car behind me got stopped as well with just a little skidding sounds (which I guess came from his car)
First thing I did was check my foot. It was sitting flat on the floorboard... I had missed the rear brake pedal completely. I had did it all with only the front brake.
In 32 years of riding I don't think that I have ever stopped a bike that fast. I never even hit into the ABS or locked up the tire, but I had to have been close to it. I'm also glad that I'm one of those riders that keep a good gap between me and the car in front of me.
right after I had stopped and pulled my underwear out of my ass, and convinced myself that I had somehow made it through unhurt. I remember thinking that if I had been on my Road Star, there is no way I would have come close to stopping that fast. I'm not trying to put down the Road Star, it's just older technology. I wonder if my 2012 Electra Glide that I sold to buy the Indian would have stopped in time.
Turns out about maybe .3 of a mile ahead of me a SUV pulling a trailer flipped on it's side and was across both lanes.
Either way i'm still here, thanks to the great brakes on this big heavy bike.
owning a motorcycle is not a matter of life or death, it is much more important than that

Glad you’re okay. Incredible story, it’s funny how much goes through our minds all in that small amount of time and our ability to put them in motion. I Love my Roadstar but I am increasingly more motivated to get a newer bike and the Indian is at the top of my list. Ride safe

Whohoo! That really resulted in a pucker, didn't it?!?!? Very glad for you that it all turned out well!!! Thanks be unto God!

Sure glad you are still here to talk about it.
I had a pucker similar to that but not on the highway. I was riding my 2011 Ultra Limited when the traffic in front of me just stopped. Some of the cars in front of me hit each other. Glad nobody was behind me. Like you, I never would have stopped in time on my Roadie or RSV. There's a lot to say about today's ABS systems.

Damn brother! I locked up the rear just for a second on my Roadstar but nothing like that. Glad to hear Polaris knows hoe to make breaks.

A motorcycle with half decent front brakes should be able to out brake most cars. If this were not true, a whole lot more of us would have bought the farm by now. Good thing you have confidence in your front brake. If you had been an old school H-D guy (like me) who lacked front brake confidence, you might not be here right now. If you didn't feel the ABS pulse, then you could have stopped even faster. Chances are your back tire was so light at that moment it probably would not have mattered much, in fact, if you had found the rear brake, it more likely would have locked up the rear wheel which could have caused it to want to swap ends on you. When you mash the rear brake, not only can you easily cause a loss of traction on the rear tire, you are also putting uneven pressure on the steering inputs of the bike which causes the rear to want to slide to the right. Next time you are riding try pushing down on one footboard or the other and you'll see you can make the bike change direction with no input from the handlebars. Kudos to Polaris for putting a worthy anchor on the front of that big pig.

DAMN...that is a scary situation to be in. Glad to hear all is well and other than some stained shorts, everything is well.

Only thing appealing to me about new technology on bikes is safety. ABS, linked brakes, airbag....don't care about stereo or nav or adjustable windshield or fairing or any of that. If I could have a simple air cooled Vtwin with ABS etc I would be happy (not a huge fan of the new Venture or Goldwing but they are technologically amazing).

Glad you came out o.k. That was good experience. If there is a next time you will have more confidence.

Glad you made it. Does anybody know of a brake upgrade for the rear? What does changing the rear master from a Yamaha to a HD master cylinder do?

As far as I know, it just makes it look cleaner in that area. I doubt there's any mechanical advantage to it.

the suv and trailer, was it a camper or box trailer? maybe didnt have anti-sway control device?

glad you got stopped in time. Was the SUV a Ford Explorer? I know that Uhaul won't rent trailers to someone with an Explorer as a pull car because of a flipping over issue they had.

Glad you made it through. When I wrecked mine a couple of years ago it would've turned out way better if I had ABS or a better braking technique

I just put brakes on my van and the pads are different one is blue for non piston side and red one for piston side, two different compounds of ceramic. I have never seen them for bike brakes. Is there such a thing.

That's scary! Glad you are ok! I can't imaging facing that situation going that fast. Going to Spanaway yesterday doing 50 a jerk pulled RIGHT out in front of me from the river. He didn't even look! I grabbed both brakes and my back tire locked up for a sec and it put me sideways. Scared the shit outta me! Dan was behind me and had to go into the left lane to miss both of us. I can only imagine what you were thinking!

I practice emergency breaking that I learned from Motojitsu and MC Rider YouTube subscriptions. Trust in my front brake was a great learning experience. I too, had a close call, but front breaking strategy from the channel helped me. Ride on, ride safe.
