  • 3 weeks of ownership, what's next?

So I've now owned my 2005 Roadstar for about 3 weeks and I've done a few mods to it, but I'm still wanting a bit more power. So far I've installed Cobra exhaust pipes which have baffles, an intake, exact brand unknown but it looks like the BAK. Today I jetted the carb to 172.5 and set the needle to the 4th notch. The bike is running beautifully now. Next I'm thinking about upgrading the ignition to the dynatech 3000. If I did that, would I be able to increase fuel as well by stepping up the jet to the 175? Also I set the air fuel ratio to 2.5 turns.

Ignition will do nothing to increase power...m don't waste money on it. After your basiic mods of pipes/air filter/jetting....you need to port the stock manifold for a little bump in power. A 31T pulley will significantly improve acceleration (reduce top speed also)....after that your going to have to spend silly $ on big borekit, high compressions pistons, cams, headwork etc.

+1 on the ignition. I'm sure others will chime in as well. Most have reported back that they made the bike run worse. You've gotten about all you are gonna get out of it. These bikes aren't built for speed. If your'e not happy with the power it makes now, the only answer is Patrick Racing's big bore kit, cams, high compression pistons and a Mikuni HSR 42 carburetor. Bring a fat wallet when you go.

The Dyna 3000 won't help to give more fuel and you don't need more fuel on the main jet anyway. You can step up the pilot jet to a Mikuni #40 stock is a #35. Stepping up the pilot jet will give a better response off idle and mid range. The Dyna will allow you to advance the timing curve and raise the rev limit. Changing the curve will do just a little but raising the rev limit IMO gives a big boost in performance instead of hitting the limit right when things kick in nice. I don't think it is a waste of time. I think when FP above says that it may run worse he is thinking about a fuel controller on the injected bikes 08 and newer.

Yea, you might be right there, Dave. I stand corrected.

Yea, the Dyna is great for advancing your RPM limit, and bumping your advance out a little more aggressively. My RPM limit was 4,250 from the factory, but with the Dyna, you can set it for 5,000... and no more bumping your head on Yami's ceiling. You didn't mention which exhaust exactly, but a 2 into 1 type of pipe makes a difference that can be felt, along with the other mods already mentioned. I've done all of the simple performance mods, and I find them adequate for my purposes.

Port the intake... your best bank for the buck is to get a Barrons 31T front pulley. Don’t get the cheap aluminum ones though.
owning a motorcycle is not a matter of life or death, it is much more important than that

Awesome, thank you all for the suggestions. For now I will postpone my purchase of the dyna 3000 until I do a bit more research. Next steps will be porting the intake and a #40 pilot jet. Not sure about doing the 31T front pulley, top speed is already a bit low, so not sure I really wanna reduce that at all. Love the bike so far though and I don't plan on getting rid of it for anything. Yamaha is by far my favorite manufacturer.

Also, while i'm on the topic of adding to the bike. I've been thinking about adding a batwing fairing to the bike. I don't have much interest in buying a fully complete set up with speakers and a stereo installed and would rather piece mine together myself to my liking. Would anyone have a recommendation as to a base shell that isn't too flimsy? I've considered the ebay basics, however those can be hit or miss.

I think the dyna ignition would be a waste since you have the 1700 cdi...your rev limit is 4750 and could raise safely (?) To 5000 with a dyna. Can't see the timing/advance difference making a bug power difference. I would doubt the addition ofnthe dyna ignition would net even a tenth in the quartery over stock. So forn the money and complexity I wouldn't think it's a worthwhile investment until you do internal mods (big bore headwork cams different carb etc). If you do get the dyna sell me your stock cdi!

if you cruise and want a fairing definitely don't do the 31t pulley. Fairings are expensive....I would look for a used one already painted your bike color with system in it...if you got lucky and got a used nice one ready to bolt on for about $400 that would be awsome.

Have also been wanting to go to a fairing on my R*,but undecided on which one to go with.

I bought a reckless fairing with cutouts for the stereo and speakers but nothing in them. I had to have the holes in the brackets milled out a little to get it to fit the way I want it but for $425 I'm happy with it.

If you cruise more, I’d add a 33T primary pulley. I love mine.

Where did you get your 33t pulley? How much did it drop rpm’s at cruising speeds?

                    • #13
A stereo inside a fairing will give you issues due to vibrations if you regularly ride above 80mph. I went thru about 4 head units and damaged an amplifier. Speakers all cracked eventually and started falling out. I sure as hell don’t miss the days of taking apart the fairing to fix yet another broken thing inside of it due to all the vibrations. Fairing definitely looks cool and provides wind protection but a Roadstar is not a good 85mph cruiser for hours on end. Just trying to save you some of the headache that I dealt with when I had a Roadstar and tried to make it into a touring type of bike.

Plus at 85 mph, you are gonna get around 25 mpg's.

I got a little better than that at sustained 85-90 but not much. About 30 for me on both a carbed and FI Roadstar.

First its more power, then better handling, then better braking. Save some time and cash and get a goldwing/f6b or a sport touring bike. You will thank me later.

They are off the early models. DK which years. They are wider than the 32T, but that doesn’t matter. Still fits the shaft and the belt just finds its path. Traded a 2000 owner for my heel shifter. I never checked my rpm, just very noticeable seat of the pants.
