  • My bike left me stranded

So I have a 2005 road star with about 20,000 miles. Myself and a buddy were riding and grabbed lunch. Decided to hit up a new spot so we headed out. I was riding while going up on a bridge when I heard something break. Bike was still running but no power to the rear wheel . Pulled over and thought my drive belt broke. It was fine , clutch was fine and shifted into gear. After pushing it to the top of the bridge I coasted down to a gas station. I could hear some rattling in what I think is the primary. I'll be taking to a Yamaha dealership Tuesday. Just wanted to know if anyone might know what is the problem and if it's a common thing with these bikes? I figure someone on this site would know.

Ah crap that's unfortunate, but I think Roadiemort is right. The front drive pulley nut can come loose and pulley can start to shred the splines on the drive shaft. If you can turn a wrench, you can save a ton money and do it yourself. I'm sure you can find a used drive shaft out there. The dealer is going to rake you over the coals if you take it to them. It's a job you can do in an afternoon. No special tools needed. You may need a new pulley too, but I'm sure someone here has one from swapping out a smaller pulley. I'd remove the front pulley cover yourself and inspect it.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

If you didn't ride after it shut down you might be fine as far as shaft-threads go. Take that cover off and look to see if pulley came off (pretty sure it did). It might spin right back on. Should get a new nut and washer to bend up/stake over...use red loctite and put on at 110lb/ft

You guys were right, took off the cover and the pulley was just hanging there . The threads are stripped and there was no nut . It's beyond my mechanical skills so it looks like I'll have no choice but to take it to Yamaha.

Were the shaft threads for the nut gone, or the pulley splines shredded? Sorry for your missed hindsight. Now, you know.

Can't see the threads but no nut will go on them , plus the nut was no where to be found.

That sucks Astrolex. That is the one thing to check up on when maintaining a Roadstar. Sorry you had to find out the hard way.

When you get it fixed checking it yearly for tightness is normal maintenance for "us" Roadstar owners

For what it's worth, if you can take the pulley cover off, the rest isn't much more difficult. The hardest part is removing the old gasket from transfer case cover.

Drain the xfer case fluid. In the first image below, remove cover #3 and #7, then nut and chain #12 and pull shaft #14. #8 is the PITA to remove gasket.

You can get your parts from this sit. Replace Middle Drive Shaft Assembly #6, Pulley #71, Lock ring #73 x2 and Nut #72, and Gasket #8. The second lock washer is #41. Here's a used drive shaft on eBay for $7.99 plus $17.99 shipping. And like I said, someone here may be able to provide you with the pulley. If not, here's a pulley for

I'd call the dealer and ask them how much it would cost to replace the middle drive shaft, pulley and nut, before you take it in.

FYI - The RSC official motto is, "You CAN do it"... Just saying.

Thanks for the information doc v but to be honest that would be really intimidating for my mechanical skills. Just gonna bite the bullet and call a few motorcycle shops around town. What sucks is the past few weekends I've been putting on some good miles on the bike.

I was sad reading your misfortune yesterday Astrolex. This is one of my worst fear being stranded somewhere on a road trip. My story won't help you but might help others (people with my way of thinking). Last year I replaced my front drive pulley from a 32 teeth to a 33, thanks to Duke from this site. I have a 2005 with the tab washer. So, last year, as I was reassembling my 33T with 110 foot/pound torque and flattening the tabs, I said to myself there is no way this sucker will back-off. This morning I got curious and went in the garage, removed the cover and "tada", I unscrewed that said sucker by hand. Needless to say off I went and bought red Loctite.
This won't help you at all, but you helped me.
And you'd be surprised at how much you may accomplish yourself with patience and the help of others from this incredible bunch of guys here.
                                  Best of luck

Damn ! Sad to find out that this is a common thing with these great bikes. Anyone ever put some tack welds on the nut ? What would be the pros and cons with that?

If Roadiemort is correct, you could do it, you'd obviously have to cut it off if you ever had to replace the bearings. Just don't over tighten your driver belt and you should be OK.
