  • Good 2-into-1 exhaust to purchase?

    Hello,

I am glad to see, that this new forum has started well.

I have been busy on working overtime (making money) to be able to get some dreams to come true. So I am going to buy new good quality 2-into-1 exhaust for my 1999 Road Star.

    1)
    Freedom Performance Combat 2-into-1
    PN:MY00141

    2)
    Vance & Hines Propipe
    PN:25501

    3)
    Cobra Power Pro 2-into1 Exhaust
    PN:2471

Do you have any recommendations on which one to select? Maybe this Freedom Performance is latest design and looks like to be correct selection.

I would prefer it to be quite loud (national limit allows 103dBA static), giving performance and nice look.
Freedom Performance looks most technically capable with triple stepped headers & OS bungs. BTW Does somebody know is OS bung thread M18x1.5?
For some strange reason manufacturer web page claims that MY00141 to be suitable for 2009-2014 only. Dealers commonly claim fitting to be starting from 1999. Hopefully dealers are right?

Did I miss some good candidate from this list?

Thank you already on sharing your thoughts.

    Br JanVo

Not to sure about the others, but I really like the sound and performance from the Freedom Combat.

From Southwest Missouri. I have the Cobra 2 into 1 and love it.

If I were buying a 2-1 it would be the Combat. Looks great and sounds good. All of the 2-1's will give you decent performance.

I just bought the Freedom Combat pipe, lots of positive reviews for both performance and sound. Bike is still apart for paint but it sure looks good on there anyway

I'd pick the V&H. Best performing pipe for the R* IMHO

I have the V&H on my '05. They were listed for the 1600, but work great and sound great on my 1700....have for 4 years now.

I don't know that they won't work on a 1700, but I don't know that they will either.

I've always wanted to try the Road Burner Velocity Pro 2 into 1 exhaust.

The difference in years has to do with carbureted vs fuel injected bikes. The later bikes were fuel injected and require a "bunghole" for the O2 sensors. If you have an earlier carbed bike [all the way back to 1999] you can use any year pipe and just put a plug in the bunghole if need be. Most pipes are for non- fuel injected bikes anyway. All 2-1 pipes perform and sound good, it's mainly a matter of aesthetics when it comes to the 2-1 pipes.

Thank you for replies! This Roadburner Velocity Pro PN:RB-05-4030 was also nice looking option. Quite low amount of information (and dealers) of that exhaust was available at web. Not any descent sound videos either.

I have Innovate Air-Fuel gauge with Bosch LSU4.9 oxygen sensor with this M18x1.5 thread. I use it to tune carb for new exhaust and already existing bungles would be positive issue. I realized now, that mentioned bungles are meant for original FI models. Unfortunately I failed to find information also for thread size of this original OS 5VN-8592A-00-00 from web. Pictures I found and based on them it looks like smaller one. I hope, that someone could verify this thread size issue for me. If size is not correct then bungles mentioned in any exhaust targeted also for FI models are useless for me and I need to weld correct one anyway.

Another nasty area for me as totally style unconscious person is aesthetics of long or short exhaust. Especially this Combat is relatively short one and maybe looks like more suitable to “naked” bikes without saddlebags etc add ons. I do have saddle bags, batwing and planning to have also trunk in future. Would short pipe with this setup look silly? Does someone have such setup?

Sorry to bother your time with this kind of issues. I cannot by exhaust every now and then. It is big investment for me and need to be sure for long and pleasant cooperation with them.

I did scroll up on this thread and noticed Jaybo bike pic before exhaust change. Jaybo: Are you going to have your saddle bags also after paintjob and Combats? Pic of your ride after all would be answer for me.

You could mount the old pipes on the wall in the garage!

I had looked at buying a Innovate Air-Fuel gauge. I have V & H Bigshots that have an O2 bung for FI bikes, from what I remember (I didn't actually follow through and buy A-F gauge) that the threads were to small diameter. I think davej or someone said that the bung was large enough dia to drill and tap for the threads on the Innovate O2 sensor.

I agree I don't like the looks of short pipes on a bagger. Also, if your not crazy about taking long trips with loud exhaust, short pipes aren't a good thing to have anyway. I had some Cobra shorties on my Vstar 1300 and I couldn't deal with the sound on long trips even after I played with different baffles and packing. The sound coming out is almost right under your ears, the longer pipes at least exit farther away from you ears. The longer pipes make the exhaust sound much more tolerable in my opinion.

Oh, It is sad if threads really are not the same. Let’s hope, that Combats have also enough large OD bung to allow M18x1.5 thread to be done. It would be nasty to start welding larger bung to new pipes right from the box.

This exhaust is Yamaha OEM Speedstar 2-1-2. I liked the look when browsing the Yamaha catalog. Found it on Ebay for a great price. They are no longer available from Yamaha.

                                  Update on case.

I received Combats last week. Quality was slightly disappointing. Mainly concern was rust on welding and headers at area touching heads. I had to paint most brutal areas. Generally material thickness is very thin.

OS bungle was also painful. R* FI original OS thread is M10x1.5. Larger thread M18x1.5 was not able to be done to Combats. Only 0.5mm surface would remain and OS would stick very deep in pipe. I had to weld correct bung on top of Combat original.

But now everything is ready and waiting summer to come.

I've had the Hard Krome, 2 into 1, 4" Side Burner on my bike for 15 years and the chrome still looks great, with no rust.
They are fairly loud, and adds power to the torque curve. I think they look great and works with large saddle bags.
