  • Which route would you go...?

So the other day my wife and I met up with my parents at a local, small bike night. My 05 RS is similar to a RK with hard HD stlye bags, dual exhaust and windshield with some other add ons. Walking through the lot of bikes we all were talking about fairings. Yes the batwing style is popular and many have it. Nothing against it and would like to have something with a radio option. She is a fan of a frame mounted, i.e. RG fairing which I too like. So this brings me to my question of would you buy say a newer RG or try to put together a RS to resemble an RG even though the mounts for it are no longer being made or even try to just put a bat wing on an RS and hope that it will do the job? I know the Kawi Vaquero has a frame mounted faring but not real fond of the bags. A stratoliner with a fairing or buy one for one that doesn't have one is an option but its not frame mounted. Does frame mounted really help in say a windy situation or are them both going to catch the same amount of air? I understand the steering should be lighter with a frame mounted fairing.

Roughly how much weight does a bat wing with radio weigh?

I personally don't notice wind anymore with my batwing. When I first put it on, big trucks would give me a little shake, but that turned out to be a loose steering nut.

As far as RG vs converting your R*, it'd be a lot cheaper to covert the R*. You might be able to find a RG mount some where if you ask around. Otherwise the batwing is just fine. I personally like that it turns with the bike; I had a CB900 years ago with the frame mounted Vetter fairing and never really liked it... But that's just me. Everyone is different.

I appreciate the information. I think its going to be hard to find someone selling the brackets as the guy that use to make them is not anymore.

Maybe someone who bought one has it sitting on a shelf doing nothing....you should post in the want ads of on the facebook page if you are looking for one.

I put a batwing fairing with radio and speaker on my bike using the removeable windscreen mount and couldn't be happier. I can take it on and off is less than a minute and it may weigh less than 30 pounds. As far as the steering, i actually like the way when i make a low speed hard turn i use the fairing to judge how far to lean and how much to turn the handlebars.

Bike with a batwing is actually less stable than one with a fixed fairing, speaking from experience

I went with a Reckless. Good radio and speakers and it was great.

My batwing doesnt have a stereo. Dont need the chatter while riding. I got HD inner and outer with Dchopper brackets. Doesnt way much and its well mounted. The trunk and mount on the other hand...real heavy.

Buy a RG. It’s designed by people with way more money and experience than anyone else. They know how to keep things from vibrating themselves to death, vibrating apart and falling off, getting wet when it rains, etc.

Well, hard to argue with that, ha ha.

Although I lost count of all the aftermarket parts that vibrated off of my Roadstar. One of the reasons I got rid of them. And I’m not alone. Lots of stories around here of parts falling off due to vibrations.

when i put my batwing on i did notice the weight at first. after two rides i did not ever give it a second thought after that as i forgot all about it.

after i totaled my roadie and i was looking at other bikes i took a electra glide and a road glide for a test drive. i loved how light the front end felt on the road glide and i also loved how the fairing was not right in my face and the bike felt way more stretched out as well as it did a far better job with wind management. however, while i did enjoy the road glide fairing much more i just couldnt get behind it cosmedicly and got the electra glide. still to this day though i wonder if i picked the wrong bike, lol

I like the looks of the RG fairing and not something you see all the time but I am also not against a batwing. I want to test ride a street and road glide but also know that they usually don't always allow you to go fast enough to get a good idea of how the wind hits you. My parents recently got an 03 Ultra Classic that my wife and I rode and thought it was cramped and I'm only 5'11". I don't know if the newer ones are any bigger.
