  • Star Touring and Riding Assoc.

Anybody a member? Picked up a flyer at the motorcycle shop. I have never heard of them. Appears to be a large group?

  • #2
I belonged to my local chapter for a year. Only about ten members who actively went to the monthly meetings and half of that actually wanted to ride after a meeting. Few wanted to ride at other times. I quit. A bunch of posers. However, the Olympia, WA chapter is quite large, active and sponsors some good events. Three riders were killed this year at their annual nationwide event. Caused by a non member.

      Isn't that Yamaha's version of H.O.G?

FP, I believe you are correct. Personally, I prefer to ride alone.

The local chapter here had to many rules and when they rode they kept it 10 under the speed limit. I found it boring.

Well from what you guys have said so far, I don't think I'll look into any further. If I looking for a group ride other than poker runs I'll get up with some people on Meet Up.

Used to be a member. Think it will die off eventually because Yamaha has gotten away from cruisers. Yami's Venture launch was a failure. Produced for only one year. Discounted like 7k off of msrp. Anyway regarding *T&R, some nice rides, some nice people, some annoying people and some boring rides too. Good thing is you can participate as much or as little as you want, they got their rules most have a legit purpose. Lots of rides to restaurants which I didn't care for and mostly skipped. When you stop with a group of 25 to 35 motorcycles, it takes forever to get back on the road. You can find some riding buddies to ride with and make some friends. I know people that were members for like 15 years. I would give it a chance you might like it. Personally, I would rather ride in a small group no more than 7 bikes. I used to like to ride with the chapter and ride back on my own. Some chapters have problems with that.. I went to a star days in Sparks, NV, with a star chapter. Great ride, from here (near Phoenix) up the Pacific coast highway. I rode home in the middle of the night by myself (left at 2am, got home @ 5pm the same day, 755 miles). I took the road to Las Vegas, few gas stations, only vehicle on the road once i got off the interstate. The chapter took two days to get back said it was awful, bad traffic, hot temps. Anyway, I am rambling... sorry.

Not rambling, well put. And to agree with you, all groups are different, give it a try and if nothing else you might find a couple of riding buddys.

I appreciate the input. I just picked up the flyer while checking out at the dealer the other day. I agree the larger rides can become a cluster Fuc! sometimes. Most of my buddies around here have either passed or are not riding for different reasons. Might check out the local Meetup group. Y'all be safe this holiday weekend, those crazy ass drivers will be on the move!!

Tons of wrecks in group rides . I consider myself extremely safe an experienced rider and that most I would drink three beers but the few rides that I participated in people had coolers in their saddlebags stopped . They were drinking beer for breakfast at 7 a.m. if they ain't green they're s***-faced or they get dazed and confused by riding in a group I might just plum run into each other we had one guy couple years back making a left hand turn in a parade for Christmas 90 degree turn police escorts you figure 15 to 25 miles an hour it goes off the road and takes out a mom and the daughter and couldn't the daughter and the daughter died stone cold sober. Who knows maybe he was smoking her b. One thing I do like to do is to go where they start out of a group ride and check out all the bikes and the people and when they go north I ride South.

In the last 10 years, aside from the group at the Eureka Springs M&G, I have only routinely been on a ride with one person, and I trust him with my life. Jim Hunton (JimH) is a great man, a great rider, and a great friend. Someone wants to run loose trail and ride in a small group? I'm fine with that, but riding tight, axles abreast at 75mph? Jim is the only rider I trust that much right now. Gonna give it the business all day next Saturday.

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.
