  • Handlebar Weights

Changing out the stock handlebars for a new set of bars that fit me perfectly that I had bought for my Road King. The unfortunate thing is that they don't have anything at the bar ends that I can thread the stock bar weights into. Is there much of a difference in feel to the ride without the weights?

They dampen vibrations and can take some of the 'buzz' off your hands on long trips.
Not all bikes need them but I like them.

I've noticed that when my hand is off the bars at a light my bars vibrate so much that I can't see in the mirror. Pretty sure I have stock bars, but will check to see if I have weights. Can't imagine how bad it would be if I didn't have the stock weights.

If need be, you can drive a rubber plug @ 2-3" into the bar, add some lead shot, and ,using contact cement, lube another set of rubber plugs to seal the bars. I haven't tried it, but it seems like a good solution.

You have to do a lot of grinding but it worked good for me. I might have a couple in the bars that were on my bike when I wrecked and might be able to remove them

I changed my bars last season to bars from a Harley street glide bars. Bought a piece of thick wall tubing and polished it down enough to fit inside the street glide bars then drilled and tapped them to accept the stock bar weights. I then drilled a couple of holes thru one wall of the new bars and spot welded the tube to the bars. You could also just buy a metric nut and turn it to fit into the bars and spot weld it the same way. I believe it is a 16mm x 1.5 thread.

Before you go through that, it looks like the ones in the stock bars are spot welded in underneath the bars. I think I am going to try and grind the weld out then pull the threaded insert. Then slide them in the new bars and have them spot welded again. Most I can do is wreck the old bars taking them out.

If you have Kury ISO grips, they make weights that go on the end. Just an option.

I think so... I had the left one come loose and fall off on a long distance ride when I bought my Star. Until I replaced it, I kept grabbing the grip and clutch with the middle of my palm... Man! My arm got really tired quick.

I've used several different bars over the years with only the stock bars having weights. No noticable increase in felt vibration with any of them.

You could do a 'Vintage Style Bar Weight' mod:
Plug one end + fill the bars with sand + plug the other end = Zero vibration (assuming nothing needs mechanical attention/repair)

eBay has weights you push into the bar ends, and then you turn a head with an Allen wrench that squeezes the end inside the bar to hold it in place. Pretty slick solution.

Got the weights out of the stock bars. It was pretty easy. There are 2 welds holding each weight in. I drilled out the welds with a 1/2" drill bit. Went just deep enough clean out the weld.

The weld closest to the bar ends is at the threaded part and the other weld is at the solid part of the weight. I put a large allen wrench in the threaded part to prevent the drill bit from going all the way through and damage the threads inside. Then used a 1" boxed end wrench with the end cap that threads in and lightly tapped out the weights. They came out very easily. Drilled holes in the new bars and will take them to my welder tomorrow.

Whole deal took about 20 minutes.

Cool that they came out fairly easy.
