Anyone have a working fuel pump they're no longer using? / Why go pumpless?

  • Anyone have a working fuel pump they're no longer using? / Why go pumpless?

    Mine recently cut out, so I've bypassed it in the mean time, but I'm not convinced pumpless is the way to go. Other than, "it looks cleaner without it" and "It *may* fail some day" I don't see the point. That last one is moot since it already happened and I easily bypassed it. But I don't like the idea that the bike occasionally cuts out or wont start unless I jiggle the fuel line and I definitely don't like that I now have to switch to reserve at a quarter tank, long before the light comes on. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how a Grizzly valve will help with any of that. So what's the point?

    Unless someone can convince me otherwise; I'm in need of another pump and would appreciate any help in getting a replacement.

    New they are about $175 I believe.....ingot a low mileage used one waiting to go in when mine stops....check FB page....just post you want one and probe get one for $50 shipped

      You fix everything else, don't stop now, the points kit is cheap.

          Why go pumpless? Aside from the aesthetics, you'll lose 11 pounds off your bike and there's less disruption to air flow over the cylinders on the left side, so your bike runs cooler. Seeing that it's air cooled I would say that's a significant advantage. The Grizzly valve is bigger and designed to work with a gravity flow version of this carburetor. You probably don't have the fuel line routed properly. I went pumpless over 5 years ago and have never had a fuel issue since.

            Whatever you do dont get the cheap $20 amazon pump. They are garbage. The oem pumps lasted 10-15 years. There was on on my roadie when i bought it and the guy told me he had just put it on. It lasted 3 months before i went pumpless.

                I right with you. Nothing wrong with using the pump.

                I can't help but think how many people on here that went pumpless and threw out their good pump. The RSV's have the same pump with the only difference being the RS has a straight tube and a curved tube vs 2 straight tubes on the RSV. They are very easy to repair. My pump on my RSV was becoming suspect so I installed an aftermarket solid state pump (no points) and then replaced the points on the original pump that I keep on the bike as a backup.

                Noticed in your profile that your RS is a 2006. A couple of years ago, one of the RSV websites did a survey on failed fuel pumps and the 2006 year had the most pump failures by far. Must have been a bad batch of points that year.

                Somebody here has to have one laying around. If I had one, it would be your just for the shipping. Hope someone comes through for you. And, fix the old one and keep it on the bike.

                You can also do a quick repair on you existing pump by filing the points a little. That should be good enough to get you back on the road until you get another pump.

                            i am totally convinced that pumpless is NOT the way to go. its a fad that some like. tried it died a 100 mph , and no i didnt fudge with gas cap . damn garage has enuf gas fumes just from stock RS's . i DID hide pump under right side cover, looks and cools better. IFN U FORGET TO TURN THE DAMN GAS COCK BACK ON, AND U FIND YOURSELF IN A BIT OF A STICKY, the damn pump floods that bowl in a HEARTBEAT, or a NY second, and it needs to . CUZ that may be how much time u have leff , cuz the aligata bit it.

                              I'm not looking to get into a fight... I have 3 R*s, and not a fuel pump on any of them. Granted, I don't run at 100 mph, so I can't say, but with all of my riding... and, the only other thing I do is to run on reserve, so as to drawn down deeper in the tank... I experience no problems at all. No cap vent, not Grizzly valve, nuthin'. It works fine for me, all 3 bikes!

                                For me it was the carb overflow issue, Deleting the pump solved it along with the vented gas cap
                                My bike sort of sputtered at high speeds as someone mentioned in the post above but after installing the bigger float needle seat I haven't had an issue with it yet

                                    Fuel Petcock stock versus modified. Riding two up is the only reason to consider doing this. You will never need to worry about fuel flow with this mod and with the Grizzly float valve.

                                    looks like you may have already gotten some offers on pumps. if still needed let me know and i'll look through my stuff. I have changed over 3 to pumpless. I know I threw the first pump away, but I may still have the other 2 (not sure) If you still need one you can have one. (if i still have them)
